Subject: Taper Madness?

They talk about 'taper madness' and I thought I was immune...but the mental gymnastics going on in my head would make the Chinese and US gymnastics team look like Toddler Tumblers!    I think the madness comes from waiting.....with nothing to do but wait.  This weekend I washed my bike...then greased her up like a pig at the county fair...then I put my aerobottle on there and took off my mirror that I use in training.  I decided it was ready to race.  If I bike any more now it will be on my trainer bike.  Two weeks before the race and my bike is prep'd and ready to ride!  I told my wife my bike was ready for IMKY and she just shook her head.  I've already checked 3 times to see if the bib numbers are posted as if that was gonna settle something in my head.  I've even checked intellicast to see if they had a 13 day outlook.  Every twinge in my body, joints and muscles send a tsunami of thoughts to my head that maybe I've got an injury.  Geesh, maybe it I think I'm injured hard enough I'll develop some psychosomatic injury!  I'm not really nervous, just anxious....kinda like a kid before Christmas waiting for the big day.  [Mike taps his foot impatiently and checks to see if bib numbers are up]

.

So what's on your mind before your big race?

.

Well considering that I haven't really looked at the athlete's guide yet, as of a few days ago wasn't sure what time the race was going to start.  I'm still pretty low key..I guess I should get a map since I'm driving there,, Kentucky is close to Ohio right??

I'm excited about it but it still doesn't seem real,, watch me when I'm there I'll be all wide eyed like a kid on Christmas Morning

The only madness I have going on right now is aimed at the $650 I just spent on tires for my car.

AND... I still need to get the inspection done, the TAGS replaced... and I need to renew my DL. *Sigh*

I'm so illegal right now. At least I have insurance on the dang car.

Oh geez... you just reminded me I need to get my car emission tested and tags renewed by Wednesday. Guess I should probably plan on renewing the license as well. UGH! Guess I'm going to be late to work on Wednesday morning.

I'm doing lots of positive thinking about IM!  I am in denial about packing for this race....I need to put together a list of everything I need.  I HATE packing so I'm procrastinating.  Anyone have an IM packing cheat-sheet?  At least tri-bike transport is taking my bike on thursday, 1 less thing to worry about.

Hijack on....

Mike, I wanted to tell you that you're semi famous in southern WV now. I went over for a small sprint tri to raise money for kids who can't afford bikes and there were about 100 people/~60 freaked out first timers. They were as nervous as I've seen one group of people (triathlon isn't exactly a booming sport in southern WV) and worrying about this and that, so I started telling some of them about "the guy who drove to a race and forgot his front wheel." I kid you not, by the end of the day I heard the story repeated more than once by other people. hahaha

Hijack off...

My favorite taper activity is shopping. I tend to buy expensive stuff and lots of it during my taper. This year it was a speedzoot. I resisted the new helmet, but only because my brother in law handed down a never been worn sweet giro aerohelmet. If it is hot I will skip it b/c it's black, not as vented as my helmet and I haven't been training in it for long rides. Spent tons of $$ at the grocery store today getting my Louisville dry goods (Yes, I am neurotic but I know it so it makes it o-k). Plus I am WAY overcompensating for making my daughter be in Louisville for MY race on her birthday, so she is raking it in for b'day gifts.
Step away from the credit card . . .

Mine is closer.  Mine's November 1st (IMFL day).  I wear an XL skinsuit, if you wish to provide an early gift for me too.

Sorry guys, it only works on impulsive shopping. You know, like going out to pick up a pair of new goggles for my daughter and coming home with 4 pairs (WTF!?!?)

Hmmm, the following is from my training log today, I think it can be classified as "taper madness"....

I walked out of the office for lunch today and saw a bunch of people walking around with salads and I was envious of them!  I realized fairly early in my training that my typical salad for lunch does not agree with my stomach when I have an afternoon workout.   So I've been avoiding salads at lunch....today I kept thinking in 2 weeks, "I can go back to eating salad for lunch again if I want to!  I wont have to worry about an afternoon workout unless I want to!"  Realizing that I am looking forward to eating a salad again, kinda sad huh!?!?  Almost as sad as the day i sat at my desk and popped open a vanilla GU for a snack, seemed normal at the time

O-k, I am off to Walmart (cringe) for my LAST shopping trip before I leave. (well, atleast my last one before I have to go again because I thought of something else I *NEED* to have!!) The sluggishness is giving way to the nervous energy now! Exactly one week from about NOW I will be pulling into Louisville! YAY ME!

Eh, things are really calm around here. I'm not experiencing this madness everyone is talking about.

I'm not moody or anything. I have refrained from going nuts on my checkbook.

Oh... BTW... Vanilla Gu is like candy. Who wouldn't eat it at lunch! Says the girl who ate one for breakfast one day.

I was feeling pretty good last week, but now this weekend I feel like total and utter cr@p! Had a headache that caffeine, rest and allergy meds wouldn't touch on Sat. Tried to do my open water swim anyway and got so nauseous I could barely stagger back to my truck. Did my set workout for today and had zero energy. I heard that a lot of people are tempted to workout too much during taper, but I can barely get my butt out the door to do what little I am supposed to.

Anyone else feeling this?
