Subject: Super glue my tire?
I noticed yesterday that I have a decent sized nick in my front tire (nothing huge, maybe a couple millimeters long but I can see it easily). It doesn't go through, but I don't want anything getting in there and poking on through either. I think I heard someone once mention putting a bit of superglue in the nick to fill it in. Is that correct? Is this the normal fix?

Hard to tell without actually seeing it, but depending on how deep it is I'd just replace the tire. Not worth the risk of getting a flat in IMHO. Maybe you can keep the tire for use on the trainer?

I've never heard of the super glue fix before.

Give it a try. What have you got to lose? If it doesn't work you'll have to get a new tire.

A lot to lose, while you can patch a torn sidewall or cut, do not continue to ride it. Too much to lose if it gives out on a fast corner or descent.

Get a new tire.

I suppose that could happen "if" the tire blew at an inopportune time. Hard to tell if the OP is doing that kind of biking though. If the OP is just doing general riding around without pushing the limits, trying the repair won't hurt anything - IMO. FWIW I've had fairly new tires flat on fast descents and it wasn't that big of a deal.

It's a nick in the middle of the tread, not on the sidewall or anything. I think I'll try to fill it in as the tire is pretty new, the cut is fairly small, a new one would cost $50, and it doesn't go all the way through. I'll let you know how it goes.

Your other concern may be that the superglue will harden as hard as a stone, that is permanently imbedded in your tire.  I can't see that lasting too long.

Super glue is not water proof - (I sell adhesives) - it might work but also remember that it is a very rigid bond - not flexible.

I only have one bike that I use for training and racing. One set of wheels for training and racing...well you get the idea. The tires are Pro Race 3's that I installed about a month back in prep for IMKY. I don't want to chance IMKY, but $50 for a new one is steep. Especially when I just spent over $100 for the two I just put on. But I guess you have to do what you have to do. I've already invested thousands on this d@mn, I mean fabulous, race....what's another $50, right?
