Subject: WARNING - Stay away from Lake Chatuge!!
Ok so on August 3rd I did the Summer Sizzler sprint in Hiawassee and we swam in Chatuge.  About a day after the race I started getting a rash on my thighs.  I thought I could let it just heal itself but as of today it has spread all the way up my stomach and down my legs, and ITCHES LIKE YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE.  To add insult to injury, I have also come down with a nasty bug (fever, bad headaches, sinus issues, no energy) which is going to take at least a week out of my training, and has caused me to miss the first week of school.  When I finally went to the doctor today, she took a look and was like "oh my god! have you been swimming in any nasty water lately?"  The only guy I had talked to before the race said last year he got very sick after swimming in the lake.  Getting to the point:  Be aware of possible germs that may be waiting to strike in your swims, and as soon as you notice a problem afterwards, get it immediately checked out, because it probably isn't going to go away on its own.  And look out for Lake Chatuge!!!!!

I hope the nasty lake water germs are treatable and you feel better soon.

Geez......what did the doc actually say the rash was?  And is the nasty bug from the lake or just a coincidence you think?

So, how dumb is the guy you talked to before the race - says last year he got really sick after swimming in that lake - why on earth would he go back?

Feel better soon!

Yeah...I've heard that the drought is causing otherwise innocuous toxins to be concentrated in the low water levels.  Aren’t we lucky?  Why can’t we get a damn hurricane to park over us sometime soon!

If it makes you feel any better, after the irongirl, my husband counted the bug bites on my buttocks...exactly 22.  All of them were in a nice, neat row across my left cheek.  Still don't know if it was a water bug or a spider in my trisuit.

So the cause of my rash is dirty lake water too? All along I thought it was something from Amsterdam

Maybe something in the water has grown since the weather got warmer, because I did the 5K swim there at the end of June and got no rash.  We swam in pretty deep water, though, I think.

I had a similar rash problem after my HIM in FLA last year.  At least I did not get the brain eating amoebas that they were concerned about!  How stupid are we tri people?  They actually do not allow swimming at this lake in FLA, only for the tri once a year or so.  Yup, over 1,000 braved the water.

I had to get a steroid  shot and some cream to cure it. Gone in a few days.

Odd, I have done two races up there in that lake this year without any issues. Thus far, I have done a sprint, International, and I have a HIM coming up in September. From all the races that I have done this year, Lake Chatuge is the cleanest and clearest that I have swam in.
