Anyone out there using DT hubs or rims? If so, how do you like them? DT has always made really good spokes and I've heard good things about their hubs too. If you have an opinion, I would like to hear it. Thanks!!

DT hubs are second to none, I have beaten them to death on my mountain bike and they still keep kicking string. I've had to do zero repairs or maintenance on them so far and I ride an race lots of miles in all kinds of conditions.

As for the rims, I have them on my BMC, but it's less then a year old so the jury is still out.

Thanks for the info on the hubs, that's good to know. A more foolproof set-up for me might be DT hubs and Mavic CXP 33 rims. It would look nice too.

DT 340 or 240 hubs, DT Comp or DT Aero speed spokes and Mavic Open Pros or CXP 33s would be a killer setup. I wouldn't build a training wheel with crazy light spokes like the Aero Light or Revolutions though, as mentioned above, they will have issues unless you are a 150 lb flyweight.

BTW, if you are going custom, take a look at Velocity hoops too, they come in all kinds of crazy colors and you can go 28 spoke in the front to save some weight and gain some aero.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm going to try my hand at building some wheels this winter. Hub choices would be Chri$ King or DT, rims probably Mavic CXP33 (but I do like those Velocity rims). For spokes, I thought I would go standard double-butted DT 15 guage (I think), 32 spokes in front and back. I will probably lace them 2x like my current set up which has held up pretty well. I would even consider doing 36 in the rear.

I'm no lightweight (220-225) 6' 5" and roads in my area are notoriously bad.

I've built 3 sets of wheels using Velocity rims and Shimano hubs (good cost to performance ratio IMHO). I go 245 off season and 230 in season. I have used 32hole 3cross w/ 14ga straights and/ or 14/15/14 Double butted. Brass nipples. One completely bomb proof are 105 hubs laced to Velocity Dyad touring rims. Those would survive post-nuclear disaster.

Get a book "The Bicycle Wheel" by Jobst Brandt to learn way more than you ever wanted to know about wheels. Spoke pre is great; two colors so you can keep your lengths easily identified on the rear wheel. Tensioning is key; be real patient here. Bring spokes up a bit, stress relieve by pressing down on the rim with the axel on the floor, flip the wheel and repeat. Start over again. Dishing and truing takes patience as well.

Google "Rinardi spoke length calculator". It's a really cool spreadsheet for determining lengths of spokes for almost every rims / hub combination.

Have fun with it. It's a good hobby. Keep your patience close, your beer cooler closer.
