Subject: Easton Vista wheels

This is about the Easton Vista wheels (not the SLs) - just wanted to get a consensus. I had a discussion with a fellow owner and we've both encountered that our Easton Vista freewheels are stupidly loud. You can literally hear the tick-tick-tick from 30 feet away; this is no exaggeration, it is embarrassing!. Is this common amongst all Easton Vistas or did we just get some duds? Both pairs were 650c, for reference.

I removed my cassette to try and access the freewheel and put in some motor oil (did an amazing job at shutting up the freewheel in one of my old, and long gone mountain bikes) but it turns out it's not accessible. I was contemplating on taking the wheel to a shop to get their opinion, but instead I went and tried out a Felt B2 with 700c Vista SLs and my god, they are literally the polar opposite. One of the quietest I've ever heard. I was so impressed that I even went ahead and ordered a pair of Vista SLs in 650c to replace my Vistas. Turns out an online shop is blowing them out for $150/pair with free shipping. I'm crossing my fingers that they're just as quiet as the ones I tried. At that price, I can easily sell off the regular Vistas to get my money back, or sell the front to some bar spinning hipster for $100.

If anyone else is suffering from the loudest freewheel known to man, please inquire in here so I know I'm not alone. And if you want some Vista SLs, I'll be glad to share the site.

This situation sounds like it may unique to a few wheels as we haven't seen it chronically and we've sold a fair number (a few hundred sets) of the wheels on bikes over the years.

Now, one remedy here may be to take the wheel to a shop where they can remove the freehub body (the component onto which your cogs attach) and inject the freehub body from behind with fresh grease. This generally expels the old grease and may exert an affect similar to what you experienced when you put oil in an older freewheel assembly (no longer the recommended course of action).

You might consider that before you through the baby out with the bathwater. Best of luck!

Are they by chance Campy?  I've got some Vista SL's on my Javelin and they're far louder than any of my other bikes.  (My old Raleigh with a 6-speed Suntour was really quiet.

ETA:  It's only a problem if you coast

I knew someone was going to say this; it was only a matter of time ;P

Yes, they are indeed Campy, and yes, they are from Javelin. The person I mentioned in the OP who had a loud freewheel also had a Javelin. Hmm...I see a pattern emerging.

Well, I already ordered my Vista SLs, so we'll see how it goes when they arrive. Maybe it's a Campy only thing or something about Javelin's wheels (they were technically new old stock so I guess that could be the case) Thanks for all the input everyone, and thank you Mr. Demerly for the thorough advice.

I have Easton EA90's on my road bike and they are pretty loud.  I've found that it's kind of helpful on crowded rides because I can let people know that I'm behind them without startling them.  I can see why it might get annoying though.

heh, yeah, I ride with a friend often, and he always knows when I'm right behind him, ahaha

Anyhow, I'll report back once the SLs arrive. If they're still noisy, I might take both the SLs and the regular Vistas to the LBS to see if they can work some magic on them, and how much it'll cost.

An update: still anxiously awaiting wheels, but I went to a couple of LBS' to get a quote on how much it would cost to remove the freehub body and grease up the internals. One shop said it was not a problem to do, and would charge $15. Another said it would be tricky to do and counted it as a hub overhaul and would charge $25.

I have Easton Vistas 700c Velomax on my ride and they are pretty loud. I bought them used though. I think they had around 300-500 miles on them when I bought them. My LBS just said that Eastons are louder than others. They could have been just saying that though.

The Vista SLs are in and they are MUCH, MUCH quieter. Oddly enough, they're not whisper quiet like the ones I tried at the shop, but they are a huge improvement on my Javelin sourced Vistas. I'm just spinning the wheel in my hands, so once I transfer the cassette and tire from my regular Vista, I'll update one more time to see if it gets quieter on the bike.

SLs are on and it is FANTASTIC. I can actually hear myself think! Well, best of luck to the rest of you with the noisy freewheels. If you're not interested in getting a cheap pair of SLs, an LBS should be able to service your Vistas for cheap and hopefully you'll end up with the same result.

If you're getting rid of the noisy wheel, PM me.  I might be interested in a second Campy wheel with a trainer tire.
