timebaron - 2008-08-25 3:37 PM I learn SO much on this site!!! I went to the Yankz site, watched the video and was convinced!  Ordered 2 pairs...one for me and one for wifey pooh!  I LOVE gadgets!

You will like them.  Once you set them up, you just pull the shoes on and GO!  I have them on my racing shoes and am going to get a pair for my trainers also.

I have quite a collection of racing flats, one for cross country and indoor track (has optional spikes). One just for outdoor track (required spikes). Flats for short courses 10k and under, flats for long courses everything to a marathon. Partly I run in them so rarely that they take a long time to wear out, so many are pretty old, but still work for their intended purpose. Some I never run in, but I keep for sentimental reasons.

In my experience fitting for racing flats is ultra important, they should fit like a pair of socks. Tighter than trainers, but with some room in the toes. I like the sprint test, do an all out sprint in them, if they feel like you have no shoes on, don't move arround, then you've found your pair.

I will wear them in a track workout if I just want to break them in and make sure they don't have any hot spots.

I race in flats/racing shoes for all races and only train in them one or two times before an event just to get "used" to them again.  Otherwise I run all my training miles in a different shoe.

I just got the new Zoot shoe which is designed specifically for triathlons and love them for tri racing.

Train in Trainers (Brooks Glycerin)

Race in Racing Flats (Brooks T5)

It's no different that putting on your race wheels before a race.  The first time you put them on should not be the day of the race.  If you're smart, you try them out on some training sessions and then put them away for race day.  Same thing with Racing Flats.  Plus, they are designed to be lighter, but not last as long.

Yeah, my last pair of Saucony Fastwitch lasted about 150 miles.  The sides blew out of them during my oly. tri last year and I ended up with about 1-1/2" long thin blisters on the outside of each foot as a result. Yell

Yea, I was looking at those Zoot Ultra Tempos....seemed a bit sturdier for the longer races, like a IM and such.  REALLY wish I had a local dealer so I could get a proper fit and take them for a spin around the store.

I train and race in the same shoes. However I have a few pairs that I rotate. So that I am putting less mileage on a pair over a given time period. I have a pair of Newtons, Pearl Izumi Streak (for shorter sockless races), a pair of Saloman (for trails), and a pair of Brooks Adrenaline (for the rare occasion I am on the treadmill). I wore Brooks for years. Tried a pair of Newtons, loved them, then busted out the sides, got them replaced. I now rotate the Newtons and my PI Streaks every other run.

Tyler,

Only if I am training through the race. Typically I only do these in running races now from time to time. In the triathlon I usually have a lot of time to make up on the run so I racers it is. I try to do only one triathlon a month though.

I use two pairs of shoes.

Training - Asics 2130

Racing - Zoot Utra TT

I have done two sprint tris this summer. One with trainers and one with racers. My T2 time was much less with the Zoots for obvious reasons. No socks and the shoes slip right on. The pull laces are shweet and you get used to the sockless liners very quickly. With the trainers it was longer (get the socks on right, feet somewhat dry, blah blah blah...). The run itself was faster. Some of the reasons stated before hit the nail right on the head. Racing flats are just plain faster.

Good luck with the Zoots.

I use  the same shoes for both.  I race so infrequently that I've never really considered buying racing flats.  I think my last pair of race shoes were the Addidas spikes I used when I ran the 220 in high school.  I do try to overlap my running shoes, buying a new pair before the old ones wear out and I do tend to use the newer ones for racing.
