Subject: Help me set up my Garmin 305 to bike and run

I guess i'm just an idiot because i have tried and i keep screwing something up.

Here is what i want to do....

I want to have it set for biking where i have distance, cadence, hr, and time in the data fields.  For running i want distance, hr, and time.

I want to be able to set it to where all i have to do is hold the mode button and scroll down to either biking or running and hit enter and have the fields come up (like i mentioned above).

For some reason when i set it up, it never shows up correctly, it always changes for some reason.

Can someone give me some exact directions on how to do it?

Hit the mode button and select settings > General > Data fields then you can chose between Main 1/Main 2/ Running/ Biking or Other.  Main 1 and 2 are always the same no matter what mode you are in.  After you select what screen you want to effect it will ask how many fields you want to display (1 - 4).

Hope this helps.

Also note that you can use the up and down arrows to display the different screens once you change the display settings.  Maybe you're setting the bike and run but still viewing the main 1 or main 2 screen?

didn't really answer my question or help me out

i know how to change the windows and options.   my issue is that i can't get it to stay to either biking or running.

for example, right now my screen is set to biking and i have 4 windows that show hr, cadence, time, and distance.   when i try to change it to running, those windows don't change...it still shows hr, cadence, time, and distance.

i want to be able to have seperate windows for running and biking.  and when i switch from one to the next, the appropriate data fields change.   right now they aren't.

I found out that when you hold the mode button and scroll to the new sport, your 305 will display the same number of fields it had in the previous sport. So, if your bike mode has 4 fields, it will display 4 for the run. I don't know how it chooses which fields to display if it's more than you set it up to display.

However, when you change sports the long way (Mode > Settings > Bike > Use this sport) it will bring up your chosen fields. No idea why that is.

ya but even when it changes from bike to run, it still has the same data in those fields.

so when i go from bike to run, it still shows hr, cadence, time, distance.

anyone understand my issue and know what i can do to get it right?

Not sure I can help much but am open to putting our brains together to figuring it out. But one q Are you trying to do a brick? like a multisport event? Just curious.

One idea is that you could just set your main 1 and 2 to your bike and run settings, and then just change your screen when you do your workout. (They always stay) bandaid fix for now???

I have gotten a lot of q's about my garmin answered from the motionbased forums. Today I will try to set mine up w/ differences and see what happens.

I set mine up like kproudfoot said above. I have time, distance and heart rate for the bike (3 fields) and time, distance, pace and heart rate for running (4 fields). After I turn my garmin on and it has its signals I hold the mode button and select bike and then scroll to the appropriate screen using the up and down buttons. Same for running. Neither screen changes at all. That is the way I have done it and my screens stayed the way I programmed them.

ok, here is what i just did

i went into data fields and selected bike and put hr, distnace, time, cadence into the windows.

i then went to running and put time, hr, and distance into windows.

i then exited out to the main screen.

what is on my main screen now is the biking setup....hr, distance, cadence, time.   i hit the mode button and hold it to bring up my training options.  i select running and hit enter, but the screen doesn't change.   it is still showing hr, cadence, distance, and time for my biking.

why can't i get it to change to the different windows when i switch between sports?

I have always scrolled using the up and down arrows to get to my individual screens.

but shouldn't you be able to have a certain screen and data field set be tied to a sport and when you pick the sport it automatically changes to that screen?

that is what i want to do.   when i select biking it changes automatically to my biking screen and data fields.   when i then select running it changes automatically to my run screen and data fields.

surely there is a way to do that i'm not understanding.

That would be nice to know, but I have never been able to do that. So if you figure that out please share the info. I have always had to scroll which, honestly, is only a push of either the up or down button, I can't remember which one it is for me without looking at it.

do you mean you choose your sport and then go back to the settings data fields screen to select the screen you want?   if so, that is alot of work.

basically i want to be able to do a brick and just be able to hit 1 button to change the data fields so i can see what i am doing when running or biking.

It sounds like you are doing it right.  As I described earlier you go to the data field like you said and set up Main 1, Main 2 then bike, Run or Other.  Then exit out and hold the mode button and select between bike, run or other.  Main 1 and Main 2 are always the same the only thing that changes is your 3rd window and that is either bike, run or other.

Have you tried using the up and down arrow to scroll between the different windows?  Basically if you have it set up to display 4 screens per window you have 12 total screens to view.  My guess is you set up the bike and run data fields but are viewing Main 1 settings.

Do you have a way to video what you are doing and upload to Youtube?

xmann, That is funny, because that is exactly what I used to do and thought what a pain in the this is. Then I kinda figured out that once I set my screens up I didn't have to do that any more. I hold the mode button in untill the bike run swim options show up, select the sport and hit enter and then it takes me to a screen but its not the one I have set up so I just push the arrow button untill I am at my screen. It takes about a second to do.

What happens when you set up the auto-multisport? When you use that option, hitting the lap button will automatically move you to the next event.

You can also do Manual multisport.  Go do a ride and then hold the mode button in and select run and then enter.  You are in multisport mode basically.
