Subject: Pre pre planning for an IM
So, tiny itty-bitty seed of an idea has planted itself in my head about doing an IM... so that means I can start obsessing about how ready I am to think I'm ready to possibly maybe sign up for an IM.

One day. (As you can see, I'm not quite there yet).

I've only ever done one marathon in my life (plenty of 10ks and halfs, though). How many marathons did you do before you decided on doing an IM? Think two is enough? I feel like doing my second marathon ever after an IM swim and bike might be asking a lot from myself, mentally and physically. I almost want to remind myself what it felt like to do the full 26.2 on its own first...

Thoughts? Opinions?

I myself have never done a full marathon and my first will be at the end of my IM in FL. There are many people out there that have never done a marathon until the Ironman. There are so many aspects to a IM not just the run.The main thing on my opinion is that you train properly for all three disciplines and you will succeed. Again that is just my opinion. Good Lucl and Happy training!

I did one full Mary about 4 months prior.

I have done eight marathons and my ninth will be at IMKY. Training for a marathon in an Ironman had a different feeling  to me  than training for standalone. I feel I had more quality long  runs than when I trained for standalone marathon versus an Ironman. I have never done an Ironman before. I feel a strong running base help in the adaption to Ironman training

OK, I know what your logs look like and my personal opinion is that you have more than enough base to break into Ironman Training and do well.

As others are so fond to point out, doing a marathon is not a requirement for completing the Ironman. But having done one certainly does not hurt. I might suggest that your sub-6 hour HIM is way more applicable to the task at hand.

Do you have a race in mind and in what time frame?

Not to further fuel the flames but a few of us are going out to Ironman Arizona to volunteer for the race and register for 2009. Chris is gonna be running it this November and it will be great fun to watch him become an Ironman

Wow, crazy...I really thought it would be important to have at least DONE the distances before, at least separately, I mean (not part of training, of course). Well, that makes me feel better, I guess.

Though I still don't know what race to sign up for. It would definitely be late 2009. Money + travel are definitely a concern, at least as far as my job is concerned. I'm in Jersey and everything requires quite a bit of mobility to get to an IM race...

Something to think about over the next month, I suppose.

My first mary will be at the end of IMAZ this Nov.  And longest run to date will be 18 miles.

I haven't done an IM, so take it with a grain of salt, but I am a big believer that the most important part of the run is getting to the beginning of the run ready to run 26.2.  IOW, you can be a 3:30 marathoner but if you don't have the swim and bike fitness and you get to the run gassed, it doesn't matter.

Yes, run training is obviously key, but from my understanding you don't train for an IM mary as you would a stand alone mary.

5 marthons before my first IM.

The one experience and skill that I learned from preparing for a marathon was training consistancy.  A common denominator of a marathon and an IM is they both take serious, consistent training for a sigificant period of time.  That is not to say I trained hard for ALL my marathons but I trained hard for enough of them to learn the difference in how I felt when I trained right and when I didn't.

If you trained hard, consistently and for a long period of time for your marathon, I'd say the step up to an IM is not that big of a leap.  You already know what it means to get up early and go for a 3 hour run....all you need to go is get your mind around dong that the day after you spent 5 or 6 hrs on a bike.  :-)
