Subject: Duke Half - Run Question
For those of you who have run the course, do you remember the specific turnaround at the end?

I raced last year, but can't quite remember how far past the gate you go. Its a short distance (1/4 maybe) between the gate and the curve where the guard rail is - I know we didn't go that far (did we?)

I seem to remember going past the gate, a handful of yards past, and turning around somewhat in the middle of the hill.

Anyone remember?

I think I remember going almost all the way down that hill and having to climb back up. Was a little fuzzy at that time though so may be wrong.

Rama-

Just take it back down to T2 and you'll be sure you have it covered...

Good luck out there!  Will be thinking about you all while I'm celebrating my 10th anniversary with my wife at Fearrington Village that weekend (plus doing my first 20-miler since Umstead '08 that Sunday afternoon...)

I remember running about 100 yards once you leave the trees.  It was less than halfway along the opening at the trail.

If I understand what you are asking correctly, it's about .3 miles. That run is a death march, I tell you!

I think what the question is how far to the left at the top of the hill do you go.  My recollection is that you go almost to the guard rail, but not quite.  My memory is that from the t intersection at the top, if you go to the left you go down hill slightly, then back up, then back down where you hit an aid station, then you go back up and down one more time before the turn around.  I think the guard rail is just beyond the turn around.

If you are talking about where the second lap starts it is at the first parking lot you come to which is on the left as you go from the entry gate to the boat ramp.

ya i wasnt completely clear. i know the exact course, i just didnt remember where the turnaround is for each lap.

as you approach the turnaround, after the series of rollers (after the climbs), you run past a park gate. after the gate, the road goes downhill and eventually makes its way around a curve. the curve has a guardrail.

my recollection was that we turned around dozens or maybe 100 yards or so before you would hit that guardrail - while the road was still heading downhill.

i did a brick yesterday out there - the run was a total of 30 minutes so i did the climb to the T (where the loop begins) twice. i tell you, that climb after the bike and doing it the second time to start your second loop is pretty nasty i cant make it to the top without my heart rate shooting to the moon. im pretty sure im going to walk (briskly!) the last few yards on both of them.

the water was pretty gunky after the storm. lots of stuff floating around. im sure it will clear up as long as we dont have any big storms prior to the race.

last year was my best one at Duke (out of 3)  I decided before the race that I would walk that big hill both times up.  I did the run in just at 2hrs.  If you have any doubts about the hill, walk it briskly and then run hard at the top.
