Master 1989 New Jersey | Subject: questions about Race Wheels Talk to me about race wheels. Currently I have an Orbea Orca road bike, with K-syrium SL's. Considering upgrading to a good pair of race wheels. I'll be doing my first IM next year. Are they really worth the cost? I have SRAM components. How do I know if the wheels are compatible? Do you only ride the race wheels during races? Do you have 2 sets of wheels - One for training, one for racing? Is there a good quality versatile wheel that is good for both training and racing? Clincher or tubular? How about the race day rental option? Any thoughts? What else do I need to know? I might try some wheels off of ebay so I'd want to be knowledgable. Are used ok? Very hard to justify dropping 2 grand if I'm only racing 3x/year. |

Elite 3371 | Subject: RE: questions about Race Wheels I'd suggest renting a pair at least once. Many bike shops will rent, or you could rent them online. Racedaywheels.com will rent them for around $140 (I think) and if you like them, they will sell them to you and take off the rental from sale price. My LBS will rent race wheels for a bit less, AND take each rental off the sale price. So if you rent 20ish times, you've bought yourself a pair of race wheels. A really great deal from a really great shop IMO. |

Expert 1168 | Subject: RE: questions about Race Wheels Are they really worth the cost? that's kinda depends on your goals and other factors. Are they faster than youre Ksyriums? yup - http://www.rouesartisanales.com/article-15505311.html I have SRAM components. How do I know if the wheels are compatible? Youll need shimano compatible. SRAM is shimano compatible Do you only ride the race wheels during races? Do you have 2 sets of wheels - One for training, one for racing? I do, but I just got my set in this past month. though, I have friends that train on their race wheels. Is there a good quality versatile wheel that is good for both training and racing? I hear H3s are bomb-proof
Clincher or tubular? More of a personal preference now, but clincher for me. How about the race day rental option? Any thoughts? What else do I need to know? There are some places that do a rent-to-own type of thing. You rent some wheels and you can apply some of the cost to rent them to new wheels. I think racedaywheels.com and echappeonline.com do that. |

Slower than that you will get more bang for your buck with an aero position and an aero helmet. But hey, you'll have cool looking wheels you use 3x a year! Edited by Broompatrol 2008-08-26 1:25 PM |

I'm thinking about race wheels as well, just contacted the people over at echappeonline.com and have to say I was impressed. They were willing to get a set of wheels in for me that they wouldn't usually carry (HED JetC260 EX's) and emailed me back within 30 minutes of me emailing them. It's tempting, that is for sure. |

In fact the data says that when you're slower, the actualy time gained (in raw seconds) is greater than for a faster person. |

Expert 762 San Antonio, TX | Subject: RE: questions about Race Wheels Others are more qualified to answer your questions but for some back up rental info. since you only race 3x a year. I rent for $75 a weekend. (If I choose to buy...they will deduct the price for the season) At IM CDA Zipp was there and renting on site for I think $125-140 somewhere in that range. Then you don't have to worry about taking two sets of wheels. Note: If you rent make sure you pick up a couple of spare tubes that fit the race wheels and have long enough stems on them just in case. |

Master 1989 New Jersey | Subject: RE: questions about Race Wheels Hey thanks for all the info. That's some good stuff. I think it's clearer for me now. I like the rental option. $140 at RaceDayWheels.com - much more reasonable than $2100. And I talked to local bike shop - $35 to ride demo wheels for the weekend. Also mentioned that proper fitting and an aero helmet are up there in bang-for-the-buck. |

It's better to spend $400 on a aero helmet and fitting than it is to drop $2,000+ on zips. It really depends on your goals if it's worth it or not or if you just like cool stuff. |

are these not really carbon? or not really clinchers? They are carbon wheels, but the rim is aluminum. They only make the clincher in an aluminum rim/braking surface. ETA: To my limited knowledge, they only make the clincher in an aluminum rim/braking surface. Edited by Sprint_DA 2008-08-28 8:13 AM |

Any advantage? I believe the full carbon rim will be lighter. It also changes your tire selection, obviously. Beyond that, someone more knowledgeable is going to have to help out. |

Champion 7704 Williamston, Michigan | Subject: RE: questions about Race Wheels I invested in HED3s last year. I'm not fast nor do I believe you have to be fast to own good equipment or benefit from it.....take that speed snobs.....I got no glue tires/rims...those are clinchers I think...OK so I'm not a equipment geek either.....My observations 1-They are REALLY stiff. 2-I ride them all the time because it took me nearly a year to get used to the stiffness/uncomfortable factor and there is NO WAY I can do my IM on them without being used to them. I spoked race wheel may be a more comfortable ride 3-Easier to get up to speed 4-Maintain speed a LOT better 5-they are less stble than a spoked wheel 6-They help a TON in a head wind 7-They look super cool |

Very hard to justify dropping 2 grand if I'm only racing 3x/year. For training and racing, an option is something like the new TTR2 Felt 40mm Al clinchers (650 shown)? They're available on the DA and the B2, with the TTR3 on the B12. I've been watching several of these wheelsets go on Ebay for $400-600. Superdave (from Felt) said retail is $700 or so. |
