Subject: Foot Pain (nerve or bone?)

Hello Gang,

Well, sunday was my long run and started feeling this pain the outside of my left foot, i looked online to see what could it be, but i was wondering if anyone has experienced the same.

From the research that i did i thought it could be: Stress Fracture or Plantar Fasciitis.

Any other ideas?

I got a doctors appointment tomorrow , so i will let you all know the results. Hopefully it's nothing major , since i have my first HIM in october.

Plantar is in the base of the heel, or an inflamation of the tissue that attaches to the heel. Definately not "outside". Good luck.

I just came out of the doctor's office and i have no good nor bad news, the x-rays looked clean the doctor said, but he still wanna run a MRI and a bone scan. So now i just gotta wait and see , until then, no running , swimming it's ok and cycling he said , better stay off of it.

One month away from my first HIM,,

Well it sounds like you have a very thorough doctor...which is a good thing, IMO. It's good that he wants to do a bone scan, because stress fractures generally don't show up on x-rays, but do show up on a bone scan.

hey maubeno i've experienced the same problem after a half marathon , i had x-rays & a bone scan done 7 months later i'm still experiencing discomfort. I recently went to see a physical therapist and he showed me a model of the foot.
In my case there are two bones the Tibia and the Talus and the movement of these two as i was told are not functioning correctly. The next time you see your physician ask to see a model and point out the area of discomfort on the model. It took me many months of questions and why, why, why but as soon as i seen the model of the foot it made sense so i will be have sessions with the PT and hopefully i'll be ready for the 2009 season. Please do not over look your situation because if nothing is done about it, the recovery process can be a long road.

Good Luck Maubeno.

I had something similar and my podiatrist diagnosed it as my metatarsal. I now have custom orthotics. I agree, show the doctor on a model where it hurts.

I think a lot of doctors must be straight ignorant, because too many of them keep looking for stress fractures with x-rays. What a waste.

I had something very similar, took weeks to heal.
But I was diagnosed with metatarsalgia. I used Ice and anti inflammatories.

I had it in the lateral left foot as well. Arch supports really helped.

I had something similiar also, when to the doctor and was told it was tendonitist.  Ice, Morton, and a two weeks of no running.  After two weeks felt great and finished IM-Lou.

As a sports trained orthopedic surgeon I COMPLETELY DISAGREE and it is NOT A WASTE.  What is a waste of health care dollars is to get an MRI everytime someone has an ache or pain because a primary care doctor cannot examine an extremity.  A stress fracture WILL show up on and xray once it starts to heal.  If it is early it MAY not and THEN if a stress fracture is suspected those tests are appropriate.  ....and what if there were a fresh break?  then you waste $1500 to get an MRI scan on something that could have been diagnosed with a simple xray.  Know the facts before you speak people.

As to the original poster....COULD be a stress fracure or tendinitis or periostitis...doubt plantar fascitis unless you pain is at the base of your heel.

Hey guys...I was going to start a new thread and ask a similar question, but instead, I thought I would just reply here and see if I get any answers...

I did an 8 mile run last Tuesday, and felt great, but then as the week went on, my right arch felt tight, and felt a little swollen, and over the weekend, it got progressively worse...it hurts when I try to flex my foot as I walk, and I am worried that it could be a stress fracture, but am unsure??

Thoughts???
