Subject: Can I breaststroke?
I'm getting ready to do my first tri and I have a question about the swim.   I find that I can keep my heart rate WAY lower and I'm almost as fast if I breaststroke.   Will I be the only one in the pool doing it?  Will everyone else be busy laughing at me?   (If so, maybe that's a good way to slow them down so I can pass them on the bike!?!)

You can breaststroke. Or sidestroke, or trudgen, or do anything else you'd like. Many people will do primarily freestyle but then switch to breaststroke as necessary to catch a breath and or get a better look at where they're going.

In my first tri, I discovered that breaststoke and backstroke really helped me too. It was an ocean swim, water was cold and rough. The breast helped me with sighting and the backstroke helped me get my breathing under control and calm down after a pounding on the way out. The best part is that I read it on a post here where it worked for someone else and I remembered it on race day.

Best of luck; just remember all your hard training, and there are no scores for how pretty it looks...

Your only goal is to get to the swim exit, period.  Use anything you need to get there other than in in antimate object.  Heck, you can walk on the bottom if you can reach.

If you're just about as fast and can expend less energy...then by all means do it!  You mentioned it's a pool swim.  Just keep in mind if you do it in an OWS, it's often a bit more of a cluster with all the people, and breaststroke takes up more room with the kick (and in addition to needing more space to be able to kick you're likely to be kicking a lot of people).  Food for thought.

Kicking a lot of people!! If you do it move away from everyone nothing worse than coming up on someone doing this stroke really not fair for the rest of us to get hit by you!

Yes...it's a snake swim in a pool.

If it's self seeded, just make sure to seed yourself honestly and fairly.  It's hard to pass people in the pool as they are breaststroking... and potentially painful

O.K. - my 2 cents -

When I swim  I am so focused on my stroke that unless something drastic happens, I do not even notice what stroke the other swimmers are doing - so if you want to do a different stroke than freestyle, by all means do so. As was mentioned earlier, the goal is just to get to T1.

I will add, however, that in one of my sprint tri's in a pool, the RD specifically said in the pre-race brief that walking on the bottom was not allowed. You could touch the bottom with your feet, but you could not advance your position by walking on the bottom. All races are different, so check with the RD about this.

Good luck!

I don't know.  "Can" you?

Maybe you're asking if you should do the breaststroke instead of a different stroke?  Does it matter what other's think?  I think not!  Do what is more comfortable and faster for YOU!  Let your competition get upset that they got beat by you!

In some pool swim tri's you are not allowed to make forward progress by walking along the pool bottom. So make sure you read the race rules if you want to have that option.

I dunno it seems as fair as getting punched in the face by people doing freestyle.
