Subject: stress fracture
entered a half marathon in feb of this year completed it and the recovery went well with the exception of my left foot. X-rays, bone scans and the verdict a stress fracture and that kept me out of my first ever triathlon which was The Rookie. I felt so broken-hearted to see my friends that trained with me to compete and complete our first tri and me standing there and not be able to do it. Now i did support them as they were in transition routing them on, but deep down inside till this day it bugs the you know what out of me. Tried every theraputic actions i could think off ice, heat, massage, no running, pool sessions and still i have that little nagging( i won't say pain like before but soreness). I'm new to this type of injury, well never experienced something like this, can a stress fracture really take that long to heal?

Assuming no complications requiring surgery 4-8 weeks is pretty standard.  That assumes pretty much no stress on it after diagnosis.  If you get past this timeframe and are still having problems you may want to check back in with your Doc and see if he/she will get you rescanned.

Stress fractures can be nagging injuries because they take so long to heal and if the athlete doesn't address the reason they happened in the first place they have a tendancy to reoccur.

in a word YES.  Make sure to get some follow up with xray or bone sscan or MRI to see if it is healled.  Its pretty common to still have some pain after the bone is healed.  Be sure the bone is healed first tho

just went through my first therapy session this past friday with a specialist who also is a triathlete and a marathoner he gave me great news. The healing process is actually coming along i just have to keep going to the therapy sessions and i was told that i should be up and running my first few miles in november also i was given a bunch pointers on how to strengthen my ankle and foot so i can get ready for a half marathon in Feb 09 Austin Tx and to compete in my first tri in June 09 The Rookie Triathlon.
