Just doing a little preliminary research on IMs--it seems the official Ironman brand races are super hard to get into these days, so I'm thinking of looking elsewhere for my first IM race. Besides from the MDot plastered everywhere, is there any major difference between doing an "official" Ironman race or non-official one? (but that's still USAT sanctioned)?

Anyone have any races to recommend on the east coast??

My first Mdot will hopefully be an independant next summer (Redman). Reason being price, ease to enter and proximity. Price is $275 if you register by 7/31 for a september race. You can enter up to 2 weeks before and it is only $400 I think and I can drive there in 3 hours. Now there are alot less racers and spectators I hear so it can get a little lonely but since you train alone in most cases this should be that big of a deal. Don't get me wrong I want the whole MDot experience of the people/finishline/overpriced everything but it is just not logistically possible right now.

Trifind.com lists all Iron distances races so that will give you an idea of what is available.

I have enjoyed the whole MDot experience and believe they set the standard for what to expect for a long course event. But I have also done Non-branded events and think that NA/WTC do not have the market cornered on quality. In the end, I think it is really what you make of it. The Hoopla that goes along with doing one of these things is really just the frosting.

There are quite a few very good quality non-branded events in your area. Beach2Battleship and Chesapeake sound like good races. Check out the race reports from the many BT folks who have done this race and I bet you will get a good idea of what the race has to offer.

But, don't count out the M-Dot races either. There is a lot of hype but the reality is that if you are prepared, you can get into one of them

Do you want a Rolex or a Bolex?

They both tell time but one is the *real* one. Kinda crazy, but that is how life is.

I am not sure of the difference yet. I'm doing one of each this year - Louisville m-dot on Sunday and Great Floridian at the end of October. It will be interesting to see if there are major differences and to experience both. Either way, it is still 140.6 miles!

I have only done a M-Dot race, and I loved it. I have a tri team member that I asked how he like a non MDOT brand race he did as his first, and he said that it was boring. he said he mostly wanted to get done because he was all alone and bored. Hes pretyt fast to, so he wasnt out ther for a crazy long time. He is doing IMAZ this November and training for a Kona qualify, so I'll have to ask him after what his final review is.

For me, I liked the support, I liked the crowd/community support, I liked having other athletes around me. I got to offer encouragement, they spoke a few words to me at the right time, etc. Im not against doing a non MDot race, and I may in the future, but I thought the MDot experience was a good one at Lake Placid

Creative marketing. That's it. That's the difference.

I did IMKS 70.3 and am doing the Great Illini HIM on Sept. 6. My guess is that there'll be fewer people at the GI race because it's not marketed and hyped like IMKS was. But the distance is the same. And really, the organization, goodie bag, expo and pre- and post-race activities at IMKS weren't all that.

Anybody who says an iron distance isn't a `real' ironman and that only M-Dot races are is a blathering idiot who drank the M-Dot Kool Aid.

I did IMLP last month and doing a non M Dot IM race Sunday that offers relay option..which I'm doing.

M Dot races you feel like a super star even if you are slow. Fans and volunteers are there for everyone. Roads are mostly closed and there are other racers there at ever pace.

This other race is small, roads are not closed, 4 loop bike course that doesn't look super safe, 200 racers so the athletes will be more spread out. I'm curious how the vibe will be as this is the inaugural year. I'm glad this is not my first IM and the A race of the season. Some independent races have great feel and folks love it. First time race is more iffy I think.

I'll know more Sunday night the difference...I'll report back.

I just think it depends on which one it is. M-dot is probably ALWAYS a quality event. Not sure what you may get from off-brand.

However, the Silverman (which I hope to complete this fall) and Vineman and a couple others on this side of the country are top notch events.

I did the Silverman HIM last year, and I felt like I was part of something special - probably close to what I would expect an M-dot race to be.

Well, I guess for a first IM experience, I think I'd like the crowds and support. It sounds nicer. I did a HIM this year and there were looong stretches of alone time, as someone earlier pointed out--not a huge deal, because that's how we train--but still...Crowd support is nice.

I guess the reason I'm concerned is trying to get into one of the M-Dot races looks difficult. I'd like to do something close, which would be IMLP, but that sold out on site on the day of the race... Also, I'd travel for this, I suppose, if the cost wasn't so prohibitive. Transporting a bike doesn't help much either. WHY are there not more races in this area?

Which makes it look like a non-branded race will be the way to go. Or I could put it off until 2010 and try for IMLP then...

I'm not the least concerned about people saying it's not a "real" Ironman if it's not an M-Dot race. That's like people asking if I'm ever going to do a "full" triathlon, like all the other one's I've done before weren't real tris or something...

Silliness.

First time you do an M-Dot it seems like a great thing... Second time it felt like being a cow herded through some gates.

I have also done Silverman and Vineman and really enjoyed those races.

Silverman is the best run race I have ever competed in.

I've heard Chesapeake man is a great IM. I know a bunch of people that are doing it in 09 and chances are they'll talk me into it too

I wanted to do an Mdot for my first IM mostly so I knew they'd have all the "quirks" worked out...plus plenty of aid stations on the bike and run.

I went M-Dot for my first Ironman mostly bc I was a slut for the M-DOT. My next Iron Distance and probably next couple will not be M-dot races. The difference in price has grown too be too big and I just cant see spending that amount of money right now.

Its purely an economic issue for me though.

I have done 4 Mdots and 1IndyIM, and a bunch of 1/2IM's both Mdot and Indy, and there is a big difference, both in the event and the cost.

Mdots are a machine, they do a great job of providing a reliable proven product, big hype in the town they are held, expensive hotel rooms usually, several big gatherings of all the athletes etc., they do a great job. I have never had a bad experience at an IMdot race, and have had some of my best times at the Mdot races.

IndyIM's are more low key and seem to bring out the more "old school", or people where the race is more important than the buzz or hype around the event. They usually are less expensive and you can sign up the day before.

I would look at Setup Inc races in the Carolinas, and Sommer Sports in Florida.

The Great Floridian is in like its 28th year, and is my favorite IM race of all. It has a great small town feel, a tough course, reasonable rates, anf the group that runs it are awesome.

Just MHO

M-dot races are big-league events, 2000+ participants, huge crowds and volunteer organizations, take-over-the-town, well oiled events. They're also expensive and can be hard to get into. I'm doing my first IM (IMCdA) next June. I may do a second IM (Independent) in September if I can convince my buddy to commit.

You can still get into IMLP via community-fund spots. If that's the race you really want to do, the extra $500 or so that goes to charity won't really make a big difference after you've spent $500 (+) to register, $1200 for hotels, $500 (or more) for eating out, $??? for transportation, $2500 for a new bike, $1000 for gels/gu's/sportsdrink, $1000 for massages/PT/Ibuprofen, and an undisclosed amount for extra food during the year of training.

So go ahead...sign up!

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but....if you complete an independent iron-distance event, do you call yourself an Ironman? Or just an Iron-distance man?

Are you a troll or just trying to stir the pot? This issue has been beat to death in the past. Search around BT or ST and you can read all the opinions that are out there.

I'm neither a troll or a pot stirrer. I'm just new and curious. I won't apologize for asking a question, but I will apologize for not realizing it could be potentially "hazardous" and not searching for an answer before asking.

Carry on.

Do the distance in my book you are an Ironman.

Tomorrow about 150 folks are doing the inagural IDT (iron distance triathlon) at Plymouth Rock..I suspect all that finish will call themselves Ironmen.

I'm lucky to have found 2 other BTers to do it as a relay...not an option with M Dot races. I just did IMLP 6 weeks ago so this will be a blast.

If you plan on racing and not just completing M-DOT offers more and better competition
Hype and recognition. If you need either go M-DOT for your full.
I'm not sure why people say M-DOT treats you like a superstar and is better. They get 2000 entrants within days regardless of quality when the local fulls are lucky to get 500 by the race date and rely on athlete word of mouth to get that.
If you still wear your race number on your helmet during training rides or want one of those super cool M-DOT tattoos the Ironman brand is the better choice.
