Does anyone else get calf cramps in the morning when they wake up? Any tips on what to do to prevent them?

I get them in the middle of the night sometimes. Wish I had some advise for you, but I don't. I just bought pickle juice and now keep it on my nightstand. However, I haven't woken with cramps since I bought it! Maybe just the threat of pickle juice is enough to keep them at bay...

Only one time. The pain that woke me up was so bad that I almost called an ambulance. (I can only imagine how they'd laugh at me, but it was 3 a.m.!)

As painful as it is, you have to keep from pointing your toes.

They say it could indicate low potassium. You can try eating more bananas. You could also try those plantar fasciitis foot socks to keep your foot from pointing in your sleep? Not sure if that'd help.

Now here is where dehydration and lack of electrolytes HAS actually been shown to cause cramping.

I would recommend making sure you have had enough to drink before going to bed and also to make sure you are eating a well rounded diet that includes enough salt, potassium, calcium and magnesium.  Try that out first and see if it remedies the situation.

I got them a lot during Basic Training in the Army and I had to stretch and actively rub down the calves (both some nights) to get it better.  I would then try and pay a lot of attention to what I took in and that would help.

I have found that if I stretch wrong when I wake up (or in the middle of the night), I can cause a pretty bad charlie horse in my calves.  I've leaned to NOT point my toes when I stretch, and it's made all the difference in the world.

The first thing I do when I wake up is flex my feet and give my calf and hamstring a good stretch.  Seems to keep the cramps away.  I haven't had any since I started doing this, and it's one more good stretch to add in the day (since I sorely lack in stretching!)

When I start having cramping issues, what Rick mentions is exactly the culprit.  Good news is it's an easy fix.

Would have to agree with this. I used to get this way back when I used to have ahem ... inactive lifestyle. Bad eating habits etc.

After I started watching my nutrition and getting active and hence getting a lot more balance into my diet, never had it. So would have to agree with the above reasoning .

Hydration before going to bed.  Than you will have to get up in the middle of the nite and stretch the legs .

With me, it's always, always, always:

  1. Potassium
  2. Magnesium
  3. Hydration

Supplementing these 3 never fails to fix the problem.

If I ever miss my supplements or fail to hydrate properly, I pay with calf cramps that keep me up from about 12am-6am.

Best of luck!
