Subject: Hydrating on the bike

After long time reading books, threads and articles about what to eat and drink on the bike, especially during Ironman or Half Ironman races, I do not understand yet WHY our body should need more water on the bike than during running.

I have been running several marathons where sometimes I used to grab once a glass of water during the whole 42k and no problem at all. Why should our body feel dead if we do the same during an Half Ironman (comparable in terms of finishing time to a Marathon) or a full Ironman?

I sweat much more when I run so I am really concerned if all these stuff going around is scientifically demonstrated.

I am pretty sure that we do not need so much water during a marathon under "normal" weather conditions.

Do you have a scientific answer?

Well, for starters after running a marathon you don't still have to go on a long bike ride. Nutrition and hydration on the bike is designed to keep your calorie's and hydration up for the bike, ut more importantly, for the run yet to come. The bike also offers an easier oppportunity to consume and absorb that nutrition/hydration.

www.pubmed.com or http://scholar.google.com/

Plenty of good papers and studies there in which this is been proven. FYI - it is not only about hydrating (drinking water), but to doing so with drinks reach in carbs.
