Subject: What is a decent 70.3 swim time?

I'm wondering what would be an acceptable time for the swim portion of a 70.3.  And by "acceptable", I'm talking about a "just-want-to-finish" effort, but hoping to not be the last swimmer out of the water.

Based on the standard you've provided of just wanting to finish, I'd say the answer is, "Whatever the swim-cutoff-time is, minus one second."

One rule about triathlons is that "you can't control who else shows up on raceday", so no point in worrying about being the last one out of the water, since you don't know who else is going to be in the swim field. Maybe everyone else is faster than you. That shouldn't affect your goal of just wanting to finish.

To give you an idea (assuming the swim course is measured correctly of course) FOP times would be in the low to mid 20's, average MOP times would be in the mid 30's and BOP would be above the 45 range.

It will vary from race to race, but what I've seen is that it is usually 1 hour from when the last wave starts.

If you have a specific race in mind, the RD can give you the time limits if they're not already posted somewhere on the race site.

You can also look at previous years results to get an idea of the times for your age group - granted, you never know who is going to be there any given year, but it can give you a general idea.

In my HIM I finished the swim in 38 minutes which put me at 180/385

(of course I finished the run at 324/385 lol)
