There have been lots of ocean triathlon swims... worldwide. As far as I know, no one has ever been attacked during a tri.

Not true ..... there are documented accounts of a tri back a few years where a few members of the pro field were nibbled on and chased.  Can't remember which pro woman it was, but she basically swam over someone and said "shark" to them and they all booked it to the beach.  Some good swim splits that day!!

Mark Montgomery was one.

I've dived with a few (thousand) sharks, still have all my fingers and toes (never miss an opportunity to post shark pics!)

This was during a night feeding dive (natural, not chummed), perfect time to get attacked, right?  Did this dive 4 nights in a row, my best dives ever.

I cannot look at that hammerhead photo enough.  Unbelievably cool, and probably an unbelievable experience.

Sadly, shortly after these pictures were posted, ChrisM was attacked in his home by Chevy Chase in a "landshark" costume and his fingers and toes were never heard from again.

Why are so many people scared of sharks..  I do not understand it?

Neither do I???  I've been spearfishing since I was 10; log over 100 dives per year and always have bloody fish clipped to me and have yet to have an issue with any sharks.

Sharks are like dogs in that they can "smell" fear on humans and pick up on it immediately. If they smell fear on you, you will be eaten.

Uh, cuz it actually does happen. Remember the guy in California?

Totally understandable............... sure the odds are 1 in a million or 1 in 100 million or whatever they actually are........ almost a guarantee to not get bitten.......... unless you're the 1.

Bigfuzzydoug - 2008-09-03 9:22 AMNo. Just give up triathlons and all thoughts of open water swimming. It's too dangerous.

I prefer to just stick to lake triathlons, thank you very much. If a fish takes a test bite of me in a lake, it tickles. If a shark takes a test bite, well, I'm guessing it does NOT tickle.

I know the risk is a gazillion to one, but I'm still scared of the ocean.

Me - trying to overcome my OWS fears by doing MORE OWS.

What I currently can't get out of my head:

Pic of someone swimming with a bag of chum on their back (without the 'h') trying to outswim Phelps!

Can't stop laughing!!!!!

You guys crack me up!

I love this pic! I am still trying to get my winter trip to the flower gardens (I know that is not where this one was taken)..... to experience schooling hammerheads.

Ok.. people.. I have been on dives (as several of you have) with some of the sharks on top 10 most "aggressive" list..... and if they didn't attack my hams, you're safe. They just looked at me like... "what's up"....and swam off to deeper water. And if I hadn't been paying attention on these dives, I would have missed them all together. You have a MUCH higher chance of getting hit by a landshark during the bike portion of the race.

In the end, it really does no good to worry about things you cannot control. And the only way you can control this would be to never get in the ocean, but then what do you avoid next because of fear, and where does it stop?
