When you go to your rack the next morning, check all of your components very carefully.

I racked my bike early on Saturday and walked away feeling like I had prepared for everything.  Everything EXCEPT having another competitor purposely tamper with my race setup.

When I got to transition in the morning, I noticed that one of my Xwing bottle cages wasn't setting right and saw that I had lost a screw from the top of bottle cage.  All day I was thinking "well, maybe the metal tension of the xwing caused it to pop out."

Today, as I was about to replace the screw, I noticed that A 2ND SCREW WAS ALSO MISSING.  They had to have been purposely removed because they were done so that the bottle cage itself wouldn't have fallen off, but also wouldn't hold a bottle.  I'm just glad that I wasn't counting on that bottle cage for my nutrition.

Ok.  Now I'm getting pissed off.  That is WAY uncalled for.

What gives?

If I was able to sneak into transition and have free reign over all the bikes, anyone could.

So what was that screw on the coffee table in your hotel room from?

That was the one I stole from someone else's bike...

Actually, that was the one that came with Abbie's new bottle cage that I replaced for her.

It wasn't just a case of screws coming loose and falling off?  I lost a cage from the same setup last year and didn't know it until I got home from a ride.  I've got a Carbon Wing now and those cages are pretty pricey.  No one better f with it

Someone else mentioned that too.  I don't think so because I checked all of the bolts before I left for KY, and the setup hasn't been a problem since I got the bike 8 months ago.

I've had bolts and all kinds of things get loose and drop or pop off....I'd lean towards that happening rather than someone walking through transition and lossening bike parts.

I had an aero bracket competely fall off without even touching the bike...

I would hope the bolts just fell off but it is possible they were stolen. I had a friend who had his computer stolen out of transition at SOMA in 2004. For that reason I never leave any electronics on the bike (or anything else for that matter) that can easily be removed. I just don't trust anybody anymore. Sad but it seems to be the way it is these days.

Lock-tite the water bottle bolts on. If they disappear after that you'll know someone stole them.

It may sound stupid, but how about putting a big plastic bag over your bike altogether and tying it a certain way that only you know (add a color-coded piece of tape in a certain position, etc.).  That way, no one can access the components unless they remove the cover or cut through it.

Worth a shot.

That sucks.

A little different, but at Escape From Alcatraz I brought my bike pump with me.  After using it and letting 2 others use it I set it next to my bike in perfect working order.  After the race, it was 2 racks over and totally broken.  I waited in transition and talked to the people at the rack, of course no one fessed up to taking or breaking my pump.  Newsflash: just because it is in transition doesn't mean you have the right to take it without permission, use it, break it and not put it back.  Next time I have something like that in transition, it will have a note "do not EVEN THINK of using or removing without permission from competitor #XXX".

I think the same thing happened to kenny's.  He was missing either one or two bolts from his rear hydration system. I wonder if it was the same person

"excuse me sir, but why would anyone want to steal a screw?"  "The world is an imperfect place, screws fall out all the time"  Sorry could not resist quoting The Breakfast Club!  Hijack over, bummer you lost your screw.

So weird...because I too had bottle cage issues!

The bottle cage on my P2K frame came loose during the race!  I noticed my water bottle wobbling from side to side...and the cage about to fall off.  Had to stop and finger tighten the screws before continuing.  Good thing this was at about Mile 85 or so.

Moral to the story:  check and tighten all screws and accessories mounting hardware!!!

So... that's three BTers who had their rear hydration systems mysteriously come loose?
Shady!

Or pre-race maintenance wasn't done...checking all screws on the bike to tight torque specs.

I checked my screws and low and behold I found a VERY LOOSE chainring screw that wold have come off on the bike soon.

I'm feeling better now that I don't think anyone screwed with the bottle cage.  That kinda stuff makes my ears smoke.

And by pre-race, that should probably include a check after your pre-race ride out along River Road.   Some of those potholes were pretty bad.
