Subject: Underwear with bike shorts?
I recently purchased a pair of Peal Izumi bike shorts. A weird question, but I wanted to poll the triathletes out there to see if you wore underwear with you bike shorts. My new shorts are very tight and I think the only type of underwear that will work underneath, are a pair of UnderArmor underwear that I have. I only recently started riding a road bike. Previously I did a lot of mountain biking and had a pair of bike shorts which were fairly baggy (still with padding), so this really wasn't an issue. This may be an absurd question, but I just wanted to ask. I may just have to get used to the tight fit and my underwear bunching up. Thanks,

Derek

Nope... underwear would only cause more problems than they could ever solve...

The fundamental reason for bike shorts is to adhear to your bottom... thus, any friction will occur between the garment and the seat (specially true when the material is wet). Adding underwear does two things... 1) can increase the likehood of friction occuring between the underwear and the skin (or, between the two materials - either way is bad) and 2) will add new seams that will in all likehood cause a lot of friction grief and pressure points.

Wearing no underwear allows the biker short to work the way it is suppose to work... adding underwear to the equation only increases the probability of saddle sores (not to mention the visible panty line). Basically, it just not practical to wear underwear.

commando.

I think you'll find most cyclists do not wear any type of underwear.

Sounds good, 4-0 against the underwear. Thanks for the info.

dammit, I'll likely be sorry for asking, but since BT is a haven for (no-such-thing-as-a) stupid questions,

WTF is VPL???

A bit of trivia...

VPL - first made popular by Woody Allen in one of his earlier movies... (can't remember the name of that movie - mid or early 70's if memory is correct).

When people ask me what is worn under the cycling shorts, I reply that nothing is worn under the cycling shorts.

Everything is in perfect working condition.

Most cycling shorts now have Anti-bacteria padding etc., so apart from the friction issue (and as a guy I know you know about friction, we all learn the hard way somtime) you have no fear of hygiene issues.

Besides, you don't want to be the only person on the road or in a race with a VPL!

I used to wear underwear with bike shorts....OUCH....not anymore!

Now, the only "underwear" I wear is bodyglide.

As long as your comfortable there is nothing wrong with it, but you may eventually find that even a speedo can cause chaffing issues.  Give commando a try.  You may like it so much you stop wearing it all together (cuts down on laundry too).  Just like Kramer, nothing between me and my co-workers but a thin layer of gaberdine. TMI???

Commando. If you arrange things well and the shorts fit you properly, everything should stay put... If not, you look like a mail carrier - don't handle your package more than you have to

Okay, I will be the one brave soul to admit I actually wear undies with my bike shorts. I usually don't have any problems. Although after reading this thread, my next ride I will give commando a shot.
