you won't believe how many threads you get if you search that.

but really. how long? I had to stop and walk around a bit because in my 2 hour ride tonight my butt is HURTING. better yet - my sit bones are aching!!

*disclaimer* I just started logging here. I'm going from 1 2-hour ride per week to a projected 3 2-hour rides per week.

I think myass is going to fall off. Or my bones are going to just drop out of my butt. something like that.

Is this on a trainer or outside?  Outside, give it a couple weeks.  Trainer?  You're not moving around like you do outside so it tends to hurt more for longer and, frankly, I never got used ot it.  Just survive it

I'll go out on a limb here and say that by the time you are completing 3 two hour rides per week you will be past the butt ache stage. Standard advice will be check your bike fit, look at other saddles, HTFU, ride lots and many more. It will get better as you become a stronger and more confident cyclist. "Or my bones are going to just drop out of my butt" has to be one of the funniest lines I have read to date at BT. Good luck and keep riding!! Laughing

I still don't find it comfortable to be honest.  At least not like my couch at home!  I notice it getting a little uncomfortable after an hour or so before I have to stand in the pedals to stretch and let some blood flow a bit.  After that, I feel like I need to stand up for about 30 seconds or so every 30-45 minutes just to feel better.

I'm not sure if that's typical or not.  But I have been in the saddle for up to 5-6 hours with no REAL issue.  I just figure that when a little climb approaches, or a chance to accelerate out of a corner, it is a good time to let the bottom side "breath" a little and shake out any soreness.

Now if you are new to biking or have new saddle or set up/position, I would give it several weeks before the initial pain and soreness goes away.

Hope that helps...

What type of shorts are you using? Maybe you should upgrade to a thicker pad until your bottom toughens up.

I had to swap out saddles on my bike - I'm riding a Terry now and it's fairly comfy.  I still get some forward pressure, but it's not too bad.  I did learn that riding in tri shorts is actually MORE comfortable than bike shorts strangely enough.

a new saddle and thicker pad may definetly be in order.

one question though: How can I tell which shorts have a thicker pad? I guess I don't know what's standard and what is not.

Make sure you have a good pair of shorts and get some chamois creme, this stuff is great for longer rides! Feels gross at first but it works..

It takes some time for the muscles in your bum to get used to riding on a saddle.

Read this article before you spend lots of money doing different things.

Time makes a huge difference as your bum gets used to it. When I started 5 miles hurt now I can ride 8 hours fine....plus my taste is saddles has changed smaller and harder is better for me now.

Not to make this any more confusing... but shorts with a thicker pad might not make things any better.  I get WAY more discomfort with my thick padded cycling shorts than with my tri shorts (very thin pad).  Maybe I just have crappy shorts.

x3 (another poster said this too) on tri-shorts being more comfortable than thick padded shorts - at least for the length of time I'm riding, 90 minutes.  If I'm on the trainer, I sometimes don't even bother with the tri-shorts and just wear compression shorts with no padding.  It doesn't make a difference to me in the pain department.  Probably because, while on the trainer, my wrists are killing me.

Unfortunately, it has taken me lots of riding time, a couple saddle changes, lots of searching for the "right" bike shorts, and plenty of Chamois Butt'r!  Seems like you just have to try out several different kinds of bike shorts to find one you like.  I bought a more expensive pair of gel shorts, and hated them.  The gel didn't fare well in my laundry process, so I wound up cutting the gel out and turning them into spin class shorts!

Yeah, I've noticed this too. Maybe it's the age of my bike shorts or something, but my tri shorts seem more comfortable.

To the OP, I usually stand up in my pedals on a downhill midway through my ride (and it's only an hour) or more often - mostly because I tend to go numb. The ouch, new-to-riding pain will go away after the first month or so, depending on how often you ride. Then you'll start noticing other pains.

Thicker padded shorts may not be the answer.  I just completed a 112 mile bike ride on Sunday and did it in the thinnest chamoi pad tri shorts I had.  Almost no discomfort for the entire ride.  I tried bike shorts and different tri shorts all summer long to figure out the best pair to wear.  Thinner was better for me.

you all must have a good saddle then.

I definetly think I need to get a different saddle before trying this. (I have the one that came with my Trek)

i bought a Adamo saddle a month or so after i got my bike back in May, but for numbness reasons.

saying that, i've just started getting to the point where my sit bones aren't quite as sore now.   the first month or two was pure hell, but i stuck it out.

i also used most of the suggestions from that link posted above.  i bought good shorts, got a professional fit, use lotion, changed saddle, and most importantly.....gave it plenty of time.

so how do you all start looking for a proper saddle. Just test, return, repeat until you find the right one?

Lots of good bike shops will let you try them and bring them back if they don't feel good on the keester. You may need to purchase and return but they'll just re sell it discounted to someone else...( I got areo bars that way, saved a bunch).  A really good shop will have some sort of gel for you to sit in so they can look at an imression of the butt and match it to a seat.  (No way am I gonna let my azz be in a mold like orthodontic molds!!!)

For me it more to do with how strong my legs are. When I've been training and my legs are strong I put more pressure on the pedals, and thus less weight on my butt. Hills seem to similarly reduce the pressure on my butt as I transfer weight to my feet when I get out of the saddle. However, put me on a bike when I am out of shape and have me do a long flat ride, and I won't be able to sit on it again for a week.
