My wive's co-workers often make fun of her because of her eating habits. That is, she has good eating habits. We both eat about five times a day, small portions of healthy food, with a sports shake being one of our main meals. The co-workers always get breakfast at the local grease spoon and go to lunch to a buffet style place or fast food joint. Then they make fun of her- "Oh you are so obsessed" or "Oh you must have some kind of disorder." They are the ones with the disorder if you ask me. It has gotten to the point where she hides her healthy foods and worse yet, sometimes feels obligated to eat with them at the grease joints.

They also gawk at her if she dare eat... CARBOHYDRATES !!! Which I am personally sick of as well. I am getting more than a little p-offed at people who are in much worse shape that I, preaching to me about the horrors of carbohydrates. I am not putting down any diet plan (whatever works for you) but I can guarantee to you that I lost all my childhood weight by following this plan - running regularly and eating a healthy diet with, get this, lost of carbs. So there.

Subject: carbs r good.

haha.  most people have a really difficult time losing weight when it is really very simplistic.  like u said, many small meals r key, they lower the insulin spike which signals fat production..see any biochem text or even the atkins diet.   and also, your diet/exercise controls most of your weight...genetics plays only a small part for the majority of the population.  people r just too obsessed with these 'fat free' foods.  ITS JUST MORE CARBS!!!  which get turned into fat.  serving sizes usually go ignored and exercise is purely optional.  i hope this behavior of her co-workers is ignored by your wife.  i am sure she feels great about herself and it may have a little to do with jealousy and general ignorance of proper weight loss and health on the co-workers part.

i better stop...

keep up the work.  looking forward to your first race report next year.

ps...nice rant.

They are just confused and they don't understand. If they were training for something such as a tri, carbs would be their friend.

Remember this:
A non-doer is very often a critic-that is, someone who sits back and watches doers, and then waxes philosophically about how the doers are doing. It's easy to be a critic, but being a doer requires effort, risk and change. - Dr. Wayne W. Dyer

Just keep hanging in there and don't let them break you or you spouse.

Still Tri'n

Ha... now I know what happened... I was looking through the forum and hit the button to go to the end... I thought I was just on the next page (like page 3) of forums and wasn't worried about posting dates.

HA.

Awesome Thursday.

This reminds me of when I was doing MMA, but in the opposite.
I had a lot of obese co-workers when I was training.
I did not really diet, but I tried to eat healthy.

They would always have doughnuts and cookies at meetings.
I would discretely pass on the junk and have a piece of fruit.

Out of what I think is guilt, I would get the 3rd degree as to why I would not eat the crap... like I just kicked their dog.

How many wives did/does he have?

I eat salt/vinegar kettle chips. In fact, I think I'll buy some today. I have a half gallon of ice cream in my freezer.

Before swim practice, my sister and I used to load up on Cheetos, Snickers bars and ice cream. We weighed in the neighborhood of 110 lbs.

I eat what I want and I don't hassle others about what they eat. I also don't use food as a measure of inferiority/superiority. To each his/her own.

p.s. Krispy-Kreme glazed donuts are YUMMMMMMMMMMY.

I am with you Renee.  I eat what I enjoy.  Just not all of them every day.
A pint of ice cream last over a week in my freezer.
I drink soda on average once a month, but if I have it I go for the regular stuff.  Refuse to drink anything "diet".

My coworker once told me about the perils of running marathons because of potential knee damage. All while eating a donut.

In my lifetime, I've drank *maybe* 3 diet sodas. BLECH!

I don't drink soda often. Maybe once a month. I do however love this frapped concoction:

Banana
OJ
Strawberries
Coconout cream

If you freeze the strawberries, you don't have to add ice. Going to make one now.

I love my Diet Coke.  I am trying to quit, mostly because I think it has been bad for my teeth and probably bad to take in empty sweet tastes and keep priming my palate to want sweet things.  But I have found everytime I stop that I get very tired very easily.  I never get the withdrawal headaches that some people have, but I guess the caffeine in a half gallon of diet coke every day is pretty substantial, dosing it over the day as I usually do.

I found the OP to be sort of entertaining in claiming to be "eating healthy" by drinking "sports shakes".  I am sorry, but healthy eating never includes the word "shake" in the diet.  Healthy eating consists of eating real foods, with real ingredients that you can buy yourself in a grocery store.  Like the above frappe.  Looks yummy.

Ha! Some things never change!
I have a gym obsessed co-worker who is constantly preaching about no-card diets. He gives me grief about my sandwich and wheathins and other carbs I eat.  While he munches down on a plain brick of tofu.
Granted, he's in very good shape, but seriously, STFU!  1 - I can't train on protien alone. 2 - If it requires me eating a brick of plain tofu instead of a real meal, just shoot me now.
