Subject: THE PERFECT RACE...
After reading a lot of RR from IMLP, IMKY, and IMWI, I got to thinking about how we define the perfect race. I have read many report where people feel like their day was "perfect" and others who's ended in disappointment. Time isn't always the ultimate criteria. There are so many variables that enter the equation. Is it the day where you pushed yourself beyond anything you felt you were capable of? Or was it the day everything was almost surreal in it's simplicity?

I know for me I have had 2 perfect races. At IMAZ '07, I stood on the side of the BeeLine with a flat and had the most intense internal dialogue of my life. Pass or Play. Try and succeed or fail now. At Kona, despite some minor mishaps, I performed right up to my potential and had no regrets.

So what defines THE PERFECT RACE for you?

It's sort of like a hole in one...if I ever do it, I'll retire from the sport

Both my Oly this season and "sorta" HIM were perfect races for me.  I put together the best three legs I could have possibly done given my then-current level of fitness.  took 14 and 25 minutes off, respectively, from the year before, and the run actually felt good, as opposed to a death march

Personally, I can't imagine a "perfect" race...nothing in life is "perfect" from my perspective.

(I have, however, had races where I was really fired up by exceeding my expectations.)

For me it's just beating my time goals in every section of the race. I set high standards for myself on race day. I look over my logs, find my fastest times in each sport and then add a little more to find my goal pace.

For example, for my last race, my fastest recent bike-training speed was 17.5 mph. My goal was to race at 19.5 mph, and I ended up averaging 20.5. For me, that was perfect.

If I do better than expected on all 3 legs - perfect race.

I've only ever done 1 Oly, 1 HIM, 1 century ride, and now working towards an IM.

I love first time experiences and I guess I'm scared doing the same race again could never marry up to the buzz of that first time. For me it's all about getting to the end feeling like I did it the best I could with what I had.

For me time is not the benchmark, is it important yes but it's decision making that tells me if I've had a great race or not.  both in pre race, and during the race. Some races that are just "training" races or what others call their non "A" race. I'll pick out a few things to work on and base my race on those things..
Expectations are easy it's the unrealistic expectations that set you up for disappointment. Most of my races I have a good idea what my time is going be based on my training. I haven't mastered the magic pixie dust in my sleep that makes me much faster on race day.

that's why seeing how my body is responding that day and making smart decisions ranks high for me.. Races that I'm the most proud of are the ones when I look back and say "wow that worked out great" instead of "next time I'll do this instead...maybe"
