Subject: 1/2 IM Locations
Are there any highly recommended 1/2 IM locations (ie great course, race, surroundings, atmosphere..etc)

Just interested in opinions.

I'm planning a long term goal race in a year to two years.

Care to narrow it down a little...USA maybe?

I hear that the Timberman 1/2 IM is a popular race. I'm planning to register for it next year.

I'm willing to travel, but Western Hemisphere is preffered.

strange that you have that quote by your signature. I have a date of 5/06 written on my board at work (tenative FL 1/2IM) with that quote next to it.

I'm doing the Florida Half this year (5/22).  I'll let you know how it was.

Holy crap - less than 100 days out.  I'll let you know if I live.

5420 Boulder long course Triathlon. its a 1/2 IM in boulder which is a BEAUTIFUL town. Boulder is a pretty interesting place. its a college town, but also its the place you are most likley to run into a doctor/triathlete on their way to pilates

i love that place, its has a pretty relaxed vibe to it and the race venue is awesome

PrairieMan in Dallas (I guess was the TexasMan last year) was supposed to be pretty good.  Several BTers will be there this year, including yours truly.  I did the Tall Texan last year: the course was hard and there were only a few hundrend competitors - and not a lot of surrounding fun, if you know what I mean.

I think the race is Sept 11th.

California 1/2 Ironman is held in March in San Diego. A bit early in the season for some folks. Up north there is the Vineman 1/2 Ironman which a lot of people seem to like. That one is near San Francisco and later in the season.

A couple more in Texas: Buffalo Springs Lake in Lubbock, which is very well organized and a Kona qualifier; and the Ironstar in Conroe, which I'm not sure about the quality as far as atmosphere, etc., but I am planning to do it this year along with the BSL in Lubbock.

Some choices in the NW:

New Balance 1/2 IM in Victoria, BC: Small field. Distances are a little funky (bike's a tad long, run's a bit short). It's in Victoria (nuff said). Plus one or more of the many local pros may decide to race. IMC qualifier, so a pretty fast crowd at the top of the AG's.

Auburn International 1/2 IM in Auburn, CA: Formerly World's Toughest Half - new bike course means it's a tough half, but not the toughest. ;-) Another small field with a grassroots feel to it. Foot hills of the Sierras. Run is on part of the Western States 100 Ultra. For a small race it gets a big field of Pro's. Tim and Nicole DeBoom were last year's winners.

Pacific Crest 1/2 IM in Sunriver, OR: Swim with Mt. Bachelor as a backdrop, and then ride up over the pass before descending into a resort community for a flat run. The scenery is breathtaking. The bike course is a couple of miles long, so don't expect to PR. A great place to spend some vacation time, especially if you enjoy golf, fishing, hiking, etc.

I second the 5430 in boulder, CO, plus there's another 1/2 IM in CO - Harvest Moon (september).  Altitude may be an issue though for such a long race.

I did the Soma 1/2 IM in Tempe, AZ in late October.....great race, nice place to travel to...though it's really brown in AZ

I'll add my vote for the Buffalo Springs Lake Half Ironman in Lubbock, TX (mentioned above!). Did it last year and it was so good I am coming again.

Only big downers: 8 HUGE hills on the bike, 3 HUGE hills on the run, and it gets darn hot. Okay, and wind too.

But if you are looking for a challenge...it's fun! And since it's a Kona qualifier all the timing and support is really good!
