Subject: Which HR Monitor would you recommend?

On the market for a heart rate monitor and one key requirement that I have is that the device must have GPS...  I am incorporating trail running into my workouts and its hard for me to gauge distance traveled...  Furthermore I want to be able to assess the amount of effort I am putting which must include hill climbs and decents as these change parameters exponentially...

The 2 devices I am toying are the Polar RS800G3 and Garmin Forerunner 405...  Since I am new to this type of device I am seeking assistance as this would aid me immensly in my prospective purchase...

 Thanks peeps!!

I haven't used the Polar, but if you are considering the Garmin, most people (including myself) are partial to the 305.  It is less "pretty", but much more functional. The 405 doesn't have a multisport option, making bricks and races harder to record.  And since neither is waterproof, that's a draw.

I have Garmin305 and Polar S625X.

My favourite is Garmin305 but you can not use it in the water.

Furthermore, if you want to have a decent altimeter for understanding ascend and descent, Garmin is crap while Polar excellent.

The outcome is: if you go for Polar, go for a cheap version which is today my model and you can have all the accessories for bike too. RS800G3 should be great but too expensive in my opinion.

I use Polar for running races with strong ascent/descent while Garmin for the flat ones.

305 also has a longer battery life than the 405, if that's a consideration.

I love my 305 and I have not heard of anyone who doesn't.  Not to say they don't exist...

Never used either the RS800G3 or the 405 but I'm a big fan of Polar.  There customer service is second to none - they actually replaced my CS200 (~£100) which I broke (my fault) and it was out of its warranty.
