I'm brand new to the forum and the sport. I, like a lot of people it seems, am a roadie who wants to move into Tri's. I've been working out (swimming mostly) for almost a month and a half now and am planning to do my first Tri on March 20. It's a sprint with 400m swim, 15k bike and 10k run. I'll finish last, but whatever. I'll just make sure the kids don't come and watch so I don't blow my image. Otherwise they'll run all over me forever! :-)

Anyhow, this is easily the best site for enthusiasts of ANY sport I've ever seen. Thanks to all involved, and thank you for giving me a forum to embarrass myself.

yo, finishing last is embarrising let me tell you. I was in a track meet a few years back and I false started too many times duing the 200meter. I was disqaulified and in the newspaper the next day they listed me as last place. That was embarressin and it sucked because we have a rule that says if you ever get last place in a race at a track meet, you have to buy 40s for the whole crew. Peace.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I guess I was in a state of euphoria upon finding this site, but I noticed yesterday the distances I had listed for my upcoming race were way off. Talk about embarrassing! The swim was right, but the bike is 20k and the run is 5k.

Anyhow, I've been following a program from a book called "Triathlon Training in Four Hours a Week". I'm sure you've all heard of it. What I'm curious about is what you all think about it? Or if you have any other suggestions. My time is limited and I know this is not a unique situation, so how do you all handle it?

I've never read that book, although I have heard of it. I've had a great deal of success using Gale Berhardt's training plans. Good luck and welcome!

p.s. - I thought for certain that I was going to be last in my first tri last year, but I managed a third to last. And to buoy my excitement, second to last was a relay team of teenage boys... Gotta' watch the conversion factors though. They lost it on the bike leg because the kid thought that 25k was about 3 miles and that was the longest ride he had done Or so I was told...

Wow, that's a pretty strang sprint tri with 400m swim, 15Km bike and 10Km run.  The more usual distances for a sprint are 500m, 20Km bike and 5Km run, which gives cyclists the advantage.  The sprint tri you are going to do gives a huge advantage to runners.

Welcome D-Boy!  Roadie taking on two more disciplines, nice...I think you'll find the site very helpful in figuring out how to balance the limited time, make the most gains you can in the two other disciplines, and mastering some of the nuances.

Hope your first tri goes well, don't be shy about asking / posting especially as you get toward that first race...

Welcome! I'm sure you won't be last in your race.

I was no where near last in my first tri and I had only been "running" for about 2 months and had only ridden only a few times before the race. The adrenaline rush and motivation NOT to finish last really helps push you.

Yeah, I hear you. In reality I won't finish last since someone is bound to DNF.

Scottsdale...you?

I chose not to start my "career" off with the Tucson Triathlon since the swim is 825 m. I know it's a short distance for anyone in shape, but I'm afraid that I'll be cooked by the time I run after that and the bike.

My goal is to get some experience under my belt so that by Mem Day I'll be able to do the Sahaurita Tri which is an open water swim (verrrry scary...I can't stop anywhere and rest my arms). Which, btw is my biggest problem with the swim. I've got the lungs but I'm just not very strong in the swim, although I'm getting there.

Since swimming in Sahaurita is bothering you, I take it you're not doing Rocky Point? I'm not...I can't got to Mexico for exercise, it just seems wrong! Not unless I can put Pacifico in my H2O bottle.
