I'm planning to end next season with my first 1/2 IM. Preferably something on the East Coast, but I could travel if necessary, particularly to CA as we have lots of family there. Late August to September would be ideal. I don't really care about conditions (e.g. hot, hilly, ocean, lake, etc.) but I would like a really fun venue for the whole family to enjoy and make a long weekend out of . Any suggestions? Thanks!

I'm having the same debate myself.

Considering Timberman in New England vs Beach-to-Battleship in NC.

If you are open to CA, you may want to check out the Big Kahuna in Santa Cruz which is usually the first weekend after Labor Day. I will say that I've never done it myself, but have several friends that have and most loved it so much they keep it as their annual "A" race. It's a fairly relaxed environment as it does pull newer triathletes being key event for the "purple hoard".

Not sure where your family is, but the Bay Area does make for a nice get-away.

It looks like the BeachToBattleship is sold out

1) How can I register for this event?
As of January 14, 2008 both the full and half iron distance events have reached capacity. A wait list has been started and 30 charity slots have been made available for each event. Use the registration button to the left of this page to learn more about these options

You could look at doing the Augusta Half Ironman.

Is that this years (2008) Beach to Battleship sold out, or next year (2009)?

Since it says 01/14/08, I would guess it is talking about the 08 race.

I'll be doing this race in two weeks, my first HIM.

It always sells out, but not until a couple months before the race.

Timberman

I looked at their website - this looks really good. Has anyone done it? Any comments?

Are you sold on the idea of a destination race? I know in my area there are many off brand HIM races through out the season. If you want to make a long weekend of it go ahead and check out any of the races listed above. But, my 2 cents, my 1st HIM was stressful enough without having to worry about weather my bike was going to make it through the airlines ok, having to cart my family to an unfimilar city and spending hundreds of dollars on airfair, hotels, rental cars, food, etc...

I'd try to find a race close to home for the first one and save the travel for when you feel more comfortable doing the distance. Others may disagree, but I was glad I did my 1st HIM close to home.

We've done Timberman as a "Family Event" the last couple of years. It's a great time. See our latest report here. The HIM fills rather quickly - I think registration opens October 1?

Fabulous report and photos . This is exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for - fun for the whole family, including a kids' tri! I'm definitely going to consider this - thanks!

Definitely would be easier to be closer to home - so best case scenario I'd like to stay on the East Coast (we live in New Jersey.) If I had to fly it would only be to California (L.A. or San Fran) because we have family in both cities and we'd have a place to stay and pick-ups at the airport etc. But I don't mind a destination we could drive to in , say, 5-6 hours. In fact, that makes it sort of fun, like a holiday. Last weekend we packed up the kids and headed down to D.C. for the Nation's Triathlon. (olympic distance.) We stayed from Friday evening until Monday afternoon and had a wonderful time. I think there is a new 1/2 IM in New Jersey in September this year (in two weeks actually) but it remains to be seen how the event goes or if it will continue - I believe registration is low.
