Subject: Converting RPE to HR zones

I am following a RPE based plan right now but am also using a HRM for training. I am sure there is going to be a lot of opinion, but what RPE range would you assign to each HR zone?

Would you say this is accurate?

1-2

3-4 2
5-6 3
6-7 4
8-10 5

I would say that they line up more like this:

0-4 - Z1
5-6 - Z2
7 - Z3
8 - Z4
9 - Z5
10 - >Z5 (or what Friel calls Z5b, Z5c)

That's more like what I've seen elsewhere.

I know a lot of people define RPE differently so maybe describe yours to get some more meaningful feedback.

I do not even know how to measure a one or two I guess that just walking around. A three would be a very easy jog. 4 would be a quick jog. For military folks I would say this is running where you can still sing cadence easily. A five is a slow run, I could still sing cadence but I am running not jogging at this pace. I would say a 6 is where I can no longer talk when I am running. I am breathing heavier but not hard. At a 7 It hurts a bit but I can do that for a while. 8 I am thinking this sucks or why is the finish line still so far away still. 9 I want to quit but push on 10 will probably make me puke after a few hundred yards. So I guess you are right my zones still need to be pushed a bit higher on the RPE scale. I just prefer using HR zones to RPE because I have a tendency to push too hard.

 

Basically I just want to see approxamatley what HR zone should line up with the RPE listed in the BT RPE plans.

Here, I'll try to make this easy.

Three categories: Easy, Medium, Hard.

Easy is going out, enjoying the training, no struggle, feel like you can go out and do the same workout again.

Medium is more difficult. You huff and puff a little, you finish up feeling tired, but not beat up.

Hard is a race. Hard is puking at the end of intervals.

So, easy is up to zone 2 or 3, medium is zone 3-4, hard is zone 5.
