Subject: FTP test on road or trainer

I'm curious at to what the 'brain trust' has to say on this one.

I am doing my first FTP test with my Power meter.  Should I do it on the trainer or on the road?  I can see benefit to both.

For the sake of no crazy variables, let's assume that it's a decent temperature outside and not overly windy.  I can either do it on my 1-up trainer in my garage or on a flat 2.5 mile stretch of road which I would be doing loops on.

Here is the protocol:

10 min Z1
5 min ON/OFF Z4/Z1
5 min Z2
FT test 20 min all out
15 min Z1

ETA:  I am using a PT 2.4 wireless on a standard powertap gold rim

Which one is more repeatable?  Can you reasonably expect to have the same conditions on the road every time you go to test again?

Will the loops require you stop and U turn every 2.5 miles? That won't be good for the test, especially if traffic causes you slow for longer than you had hoped at each turn. At your pace, I am guessing that will be every 5.5-6 mins.

I have a nice road here where I can ride for 30 mins with no lights, stop signs or turns to worry about. I liked to test on there. I find watts to be relatively the same indoor vs. outdoor, but cooling can be an issue inside, making those FT tests a lot more difficult.

Dan if you are thinking about doing your test at Columns then I would vote for the trainer also. I did my FTP out there and the U turn at the park is more of a variable then you would think. Also like Aaron said the trainer is repeatable, which is good if you are going to retest yourself over the winter.

The repetition issue is a good point and one I didn't think of, I vote trainer!

Plus there is the get yelled at motivated factor being on the trainer.

Repeatability is over-rated anyway

I say trainer and aero position, so your FTP is based on the position you'll race.

Dan, as we discussed already I vote road for your first FTP test and then do another test maybe a week later on the trainer for comparison and for tracking winter progress if you'll be doing most of your winter training/testing inside.  I wouldn't want to have any doubts how a trainer test might translate to the real world.  If you think you're going to be racing on a trainer   then by all means do all of your tests on a trainer, but you need to know what you can do in the real world.  I agree with others that for winter, the trainer will be repeatable but if it were me I'd like to get a road test in before winter hits then switch to the trainer.  Once spring arrives, hit the road again.  As suggested above, I'd try to find a better road situation for your outdoor test.  I'm spoiled, I have a beautiful stretch of river road with new pavement, little/no traffic, no intersections, and wind protection on which I can do my testing.

Already got my opinions.  Repeatability is important, but real world resistance factors are also good to know.  They are just unpredictiable which can alter results more.

I vote road. Can you push yourself as hard on trainer as road? Have you been riding the trainer lately? If not does it take awhile to get into the rhythm of trainer rides for you like it does me?

I do mine on the same stretch of road that I do real TT in the summer on...

Interesting as my power can be higher but my time can be slower as it shows how weather, wind, etc effects time/pace. You are really going for power not time so weather shouldn't matter right?

All good points.  I do my week day riding on  my trainer because there is nowhere close to get a Z4 interval set in Atlanta without stopping.  My weekend riding is done on the road.

Much to my shagrin, I've been doing a lot of trainer riding this season.  Maybe I can find a cop willing to escort me through Atlanta traffic...

I would vote trainer.  One thing I have to keep in mind is to make sure my fluid trainer is fully "warmed up". Otherwise I have to shift down (easier) to maintain my power output. I've learned that it sometimes takes close to 30 minutes.
