I've had deer, antelope, prarie dogs, foxes, coyotes, snakes of various types including rattlers, skunks, raccoons, squirrels, and a black bear. About the only local critter I've never seen on a run is a mountain lion. The black bear was a cub and was in the middle of the trail. I stopped and waited for it to move on and got of there quickly before mama bear came looking. Snakes can be startling because they just look like sticks on the trail until I get really close. I've had friends get bit by rattlers so I'm wary of most snakes. Most of the other critters just try to clear out when the see or hear me.

I also scared a little skunk a few times last fall until it learned my schedule and started avoiding me. Deer are fairly common here, as are rabbits, and I almost stepped on a medium sized unidentified rodent last spring that appeared to be wouned and squirming around on the bike path. There are also lots of wild turkeys here. I almost ran over a chipmunk on my bike on Sunday.

That's funny you bring this up today. At the end of my bike, while cooling down going up and down cul-de-sacks, I see this gray blur come towards me. I'm used to squirrels but this one comes right up to me then turns so it's basically racing me. I'm doing 12 MPH, spinning up a hill and this squirrel hangs with me for 4 driveways, about 10-15 yards. Holy cow! Those little paws were just FLYING. Then it turned off and ran into a yard.

This is a little critter I ran into on a ride last year.

I tend to run in the early evening in the middle of town, so I don't have to deal with too many critters, but on two runs in a row this week a gnat flew directly into my left eye.  Fortunately today's run broke the streak.

Owing to my unusual work/sleep schedule, I run after dark quite a lot.  I see and hear quite a bit of wildlife while out there - often deer crashing through the woods, owls, loads of bats, frogs and toads (especially when raining), etc.  Just tonight I saw a fox scamper across a driveway about 50' away from me.

My most bizarre near-collision was a few weeks ago... an armadillo tried to wander across my path.  Fortunately he was in a semi-lit area, so I spotted him first.  I stopped to watch him and he waddled right by me, I could have bent over and picked him up.  They must have really lousy eyesight.  It's no wonder the roadsides are littered with their carcasses....

Along this bike path that I ride is a habitat for prairie dogs. I've had several near misses. One time one of them manage to somehow scoot underneath my chainring as I was riding. I'm pretty sure it left some fur in between my chain.

I run late at night around my neighborhood and the rabbits like to come out at night. I think some have gotten used to me because they don't really scurry away when I come running.

I've been seeing a lot of deer lately on the trail where I ride, but the trail is also near a gun club. (Signs on the trail warn of the noise, and our local graffiti artists have added things like "Don't be skeered - it's jest a lil shootin") I find myself yelling at the deer "Stay away from the humans with guns!"

Unfortunately, I've been seeing a lot of snakes on the trail lately (probably because of all of the rain). Bikers tend to yell at each other "Snake at mile marker 5!" I hate snakes.

Other frequent visitors include turkeys (wild and domestic) and rabbits. The funniest is a small cat who I think lives nearby - one day he actually walked out onto the trail and started chasing me on my bike. I stopped to pet him and he started rubbing all over my bike. It took me a while to get away. I think I'm kind of a stray cat magnet, though.

Then there are the squirrels. The stupid squirrels who freeze as they are trying to cross the road. I haven't hit one yet, but I'm scared I will eventually.

About a year ago I saw a deer that had just been hit by a car.  It was struggling to get up.  That was very sad.

The squirrels this time of year are awful. Through some areas, I have to ride with my hands literally on the brakes (not braking, but ready to). Even the ones that are on the side of the road, in the grass, will leap out into the road right in front of me when I ride by. I think I just have really bad luck. I counted 7 complete stops for squirrels in less than 6 minutes on a ride the other day. Seriously! And, I'm a pretty decent rider with pretty decent handling skills, not a little nervous nelly one who's overexaggerating the seriousness of this issue. I hit a squirrel earlier this year; fortunately, I did not go down, but I have a fear of it getting caught in my spokes, then wrapping around and bringing my bike to a complete stop when it hits the fork. I was told this is unlikely, but still....

Not a fan of the squirrels.

I was running awhile ago and came up on a group (herd or whatever) of deer, about 8 of them together. they all took one look at me and ran about 20 yards ahead of me and then stopped and turned towatds me. This made me a little nervous because you know when you get a group of people together, there is always one a**hole in the group, so I just stopped. We had a stare down until they all ran and leaped into the woods.  Was alittle bit concerning...

That would definitely be concerning!  I had one step towards me once, and I nearly freaked!

I typically ride on a fairly rural trail, so I get wildlife all the time.  See deer a couple times a week, squirrels, rabbits, and chipmunks everyday, turtles.  Once had a wild turkey try to out fly me - finally he went off to the side, occasional snakes - ran over one today.  Today saw two dead mice about 2 miles apart - that was a first.

Lots of fun - always an adventure!

I just started running but hiking, I've seen a lot!

I've smelled skunks, although never seen them, I've seen multiple deer, snakes, fox, racoon, rabbits, turtles, geese, ducks, squirrels (all over the place), chipmunks and... a black bear!
