Might be in for the 5K if I'm in town (not HM, since it's one week after JerseyMan).

That's a very fun and well supported race.

Not me - but I just did my first HM at Jercey City last weekend, the newport liberty half marathon, fun race.  Then I'm jumping straight to longer distance with the LBI 18-miler in 2 weeks.

Jersey Marathon (the full mary) is on my radar for spring but it depends on how I do this Sunday w/ the HM as well as how I keep to my training going long this winter hopefully without significant injury.  If so - it would be my first full marathon and a good stepping stone toward HIM next summer and ideally an eventual IM.

Bob,

I'm doing this as a part of a 23mi run in my prep towards NY...going to run 9mi before the start + the HM + a 1mi c/d.

I don't know what your plans are from a pacing standpt, but I have a few guys doing it & you're MORE THAN welcome to join in w/ us if you'd like. I'm going to do the 9 easy before the start, then run the 1st 6.5mi @ 7:30 pace & the last 6.5 at marathon pace (~6:30mi pace). I believe I'll have at least (1) runner who is aiming to hold 7:30's for the whole thing, so I'll be running w/ him for the 1st lap.

Anyway, shoot me an e-mail ([email protected]) if you'd like to connect as we've got about 6 guys doing it aiming for times from low 1:30's to 2hrs. Don't be shy in the morning (I'll have a PBN singlet on w/ blue sunglasses)...see you there!!

It was my first half mary and was hoping for a 2-ish finish and lo and behold I ended up with 1:48.11.7 (results cut the 1: hour digit).

http://eliteracingsystems.com/2008_roadraces_results/2008_jerseyshorehalf.html

My name is listed as Witanets - haha - been called worse for sure.

Witanets Robert M48 1453 Belle Mead NJ
Position 193 (out of 654)
Gender position: 151
AG position: 36 of 79
Total Time: 1:48:11.7
Pace: 8:16
AG Time 1:37:19.3  (not sure what that is)
Age percentile 60.85%

Pleased with my 8:16 pace - every time I had run 13 - 15 miles on my own previously the pace was more like 9:00.

Had some pacing help from Brian Shea (Thanks) of Personal Best Nutrition - he was maintaining a 7.5 pace for first half of race.  I kept with him for a few miles but then faded back from there.  I usually go out too fast in the shorter races I had been in so that helped.  He was very precise in his pacing!

I am considering NJ marathon in May but today is not the day to decide as I am in recovery.  No injuries but achey - especially when I stand up from sitting.  I need to do some more stretches tonight and tomorrow.

I know from the run that I am not at this point ready for a full mary nor for an HIM but that's what the winter is for - haha!

While I am suffering through the aches - my pride is beaming!

Bob

Bob,

Great meeting you yesterday morning & way to blow that 2hr mark out of the water! I'd say if you backed off the pace even a little more in those early miles, you may be able to shave a few more mins off that time at your current fitness level.

Also, I know you were w/ us for awhile, so I posted the splits if you want to dump those in your log (in case you weren't taking your own - see below).

This was honestly one of the best marathon-prep workouts I've ever had. Coupled w/ the fact that I was coming off a really bad injury and logged '0' miles from Sept '07 - Jan '08, this was a really nice indicator for me in my lead into NY.

Anyway, this was pulled from my log if you need the early splits:

--------------------------------------------------------

Workout:
50-60min easy warm-up
6.5-7miles easy + 6 miles at MP (Marathon Pace) + cool down

Workout Notes: 22 Miles Total:

48mins easy w/u, probably about 7:45-8min pace w/ about a 5-7min gap from my w/u to
the race start

Race Splits:
1. 7:35
2. 7:31 (15:07)
3. 7:25 (22:32)
4. 7:22 (29:54)
5. 7:22 (37:16)
6. 7:26 (44:43)
7. 7:22 (52:05)
8. 6:11 (58:16) - started MP pick-ups
9. 6:18 (1:04:35)
10. 6:11 (1:10:47)
11. 6:14 (1:17:02)
12. 6:08 (1:23:10)
13.1 6:48 (1:29:57)....6:09 pace for final 1.1mi

~3mi c/d out/back on course.

Finished off the week at 76+ miles total.

--------------------------------------------------------

PS...if you liked your name in the results, have a look at the guy in 19th place (you know this guy?!? ;o)

Keep in touch Bob, look fwd to catch-up w/ you again soon!

Thanks again and for the additional advice.  You had coached me accordingly during the race as well suggesting that I back off to a 7:45 pace and see if I can maintain a little slower for the whole race.  You are probably right - the problem being that i have no way of calibrating my pace with any level of accuracy.  At least keeping you in sight I knew that I was pacing if perhaps not at the perfect pace for my present level of fitness.

For you and other expert runners, it probably comes second nature after training with a watch etc.  I pretty much have winged my pacing and have not used a watch - trying to economize on all of the triathlon toys we need.  However, I am thinking that I could benefit from using a watch so that I would know the difference between running at a 7:30 vs. 7:45 pace.  Even though you are probably right that I would have benefited from keeping a slower pace - once I dropped back from your crew I had no way to know what pace I was running.  I will make pace calibrartion part of what I work on over the winter and might just break down and get myself a running watch!
