Subject: Sick..... Again
Hi,

I seem to get sick quite often now I'm training more. It always seeems to be at the same sort of distances that I hit a road block and get sick aswell.

4x morning swims of about 1.5 hours
3x 30/40 minute runs
3x bikes (50km, 60km, 70km)

It always seems to be this week where I get sick. Why do you think so? What can I do about it?
Please help!!

Your body is telling you that it can't adapt to the physical stresses you are placing on it. Back off a bit. After a couple of weeks slowly increase either the intensity or duration of your training, but not both. You don't help your conditioning by overtraining (which sounds like what you are doing) you are only hurting it.

Sleep and good nutrition can also go a long way toward helping you recover and keep your immune system from taking such a big hit. I've been really diligent about refueling and getting enough rest lately and haven't been sick in months (knock on wood).

You're not sick from overtraining at that volume.

I have always been under the impression that overtraining is not a result of a specific amount of training, but rather your body's inability to adapt to the increasing demands being placed upon it.

 In other words:

VT (not =) POT     [Volume of Training is not equal to the potential for overtraining]

 But rather

DeltaVT = DeltaPOT     [Change in the volume of training is equal to the change in the potential for overtraining]

 Similarly

DeltaIT = DeltaPOT     [Change in the intensity of training is equal to the change in the potential for overtraining]

Of course there are many other factors. Rest as mentioned is number one in my book with nutrition a close second. However, age plays an increasing role particularly when you get old and slow like me.

Are you working a lot of hours, getting less sleep than you should, or otherwise stressing yourself in addition to training?

I ask because everytime I get "run down", I get sick.  I know it's just anecdotal and not scientific, but I've had it happen many times when I'm taxing my body too much.

Do you have a kid in Daycare?

Since our daughter started day care 10 months ago, between my wife and I, one of us has been sick almost constantly.

I'm still battling a cold from two weeks ago that turned into a sinus infection that turned into a nasty cough.
