Subject: Normal to be sore during a taper?
OK, so this week is meant to be taper week (OLY on Sat). I have backed off on training quite a bit. Did a 4 mile run Friday, 12 mile bike on sat, 15 mile bike/2mile run brick on Sunday and then some OWS in my new wetsuit last night. All those distances are prob in the 50-70% range of what I was doing the previous weeks, so it seems like a reasonable taper to me. My question is why am I sore after backing off on the distances? My knee hurts now, my hips are tight, I am tired and blah. I've tapered before and don't remember being so cranky. Whats going on?

Your body is in the process of rebuilding itself after being beaten up through all the training. It is normal to be feeling like you do, fight the urge to up the distances/intensities above your plan. You'll be tempted for that extra confidence boost, at least I was.  I tapered for an olympic at the beginning of this month, trust in the taper and realize nothing you can do now to increase your fitness level.  Good luck!

Is it also possible you aren't stretching as much afterwards since you don't feel like you're really pushing hard?

Yes, this is the time that your mind actually begins listening to your body, and it hears "HEY DUMMY, THAT HURTS!"

I'm in the same boat as you.  Literally.  Tapering for Pinehurst.  Yesterday was an eternity for me.  Tomorrow will be as well.  At least today I get to play a little, then again on Thursday.

Today's ailment is a sore left quad.  Yesterday's was chafing in an area that I NEVER forget Bodyglide on, but did for Sunday's long run.  ouch.

That was totally me last week before my first HIM. Left foot was sore for a couple days, back had a few twinges for 2 days, right knee felt awkward for a day, got a cold.... yatta yatta. I was all dang I cut back this much and why am I getting new aches off of wimp workouts? It will all come together though, you won't lose anything 1 week before your Tri. Your body just has an Under Construction sign up.

Wait, are you talking about your taper or mine? Hahaha. I feel better now, especially the "I was all dang, I cut back this much and why am I getting new aches off wimp workouts". I'll just muddle on through this week and see the pains as a good sign of recovery. :-)

Stretching, diet, and sleep...  Take care of those three and you'll be ready on race day. Conventional wisdom says that you should feel slightly undertrained for your event.

Good luck!

I have same experience during a taper...aches and pains and just generally miserable!! Rest assured as others have said it will all come together on race day! Good Luck with your race.
