Subject: Road saddle vs. Tri saddle

I currently do not own a tri bike.  I use a road bike and a Sella Italia signo saddle which is very hard/firm.  I have noticed a lot of the tri saddles look much softer and bull nosed.  Can someone explain the reason for the difference?

When riding bent over in an aero position on a tri bike, often on the front 1/3 of the saddle, it tends to compress your 'junk' much more than when riding in a more upright, road position. This junk compression has led to the designs for tri saddles you are describing.
