I recently had pain in my big toe on my right foot.  I went to the podiatrist and was diagnosed with a bunion.  He wanted to surgically remove it immediately and said it would sideline me for 6 weeks!  From what i have read it does not appear that surgery is the way to go for runners. I would much rather try treatment if possible.

Any thoughts or words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

What type of surgery? I had a modified dorsal bunion surgery which shortened the 1st metatarsal. Recovery was 6 weeks before I could start running.....Sometimes I wish I didn't have it because now there are issues with the 2nd metatarsal!

Thanks for the response.

The doc mentioned opening up the foot at the end of the 1st Metatarsal bone and cutting away the lump that has formed there.   I would rather try to seek treatment and therapy before I go under the knife.  I may seek another opinion from a Physical Therapist.  Any suggestions?

Thanks

I have a huge bunion on my left foot.  Looks almost like a 6th toe to the right of my big toe   I've had the thing for since H.S., maybe even Jr. High (we're talking 30 years here).

I haven't done anything with it.  I've "grown attached" to it, you might say.  No problems other than maybe it hurts like a son-of-a-gun when I buy a new pair of shoes that need a lot of breaking in.

I am seeing a PT for a bunion.  Mine is considered mild...really I just noticed it this summer as I was getting a callus on my foot.  Anyway, the PT is using kinesiotape (seriously!) on my foot to hold the toe straight, plus taping my arches.  They suggested I try Superfeet insoles and then if they help, I'll get orthotics to help support the arch, which for me will help prevent the bunion from getting worse.  I'd prefer to hold off on surgery as long as possible.  They told me I'd need surgery at some point in life probably for it.

Thanks for the info.

How was the Kinesio tape used?  Did the doc tape your big toe to your middle toe/s?

Nope.  The tape starts along the big toe, then along the inside of the foot, around the heel, under the foot back to the big toe.  The tape gets pulled along the inside of the foot such that it pulls the big toe straight.  Does that make sense?  I could take a picture

I have them too.  Like COgirl, it's expected that I will need surgery eventually.  My doctor (sports med) told me to keep training until the pain got unbearable, and then we could look into it.  Surgery is a last resort.  Right now I am managing it fairly well with orthotics, although I plan to get a pad or something for biking and snowboarding.

I do experience pain, but it's still bearable.  I'm hoping to time my eventual surgery to coincide somehow with a pregnancy.  Doesn't look like that is an option with you, however.

Thanks for the reply.  I get fitted tomorrow for orthotics, it sounds like that may do me for awhile. I guess that I'll have to consider surgery at some point down the road.

Good luck on your future goal to give birth and have your bunion/s removed at the same time.  I guess if I become pregnant a bunion will be the least of my worries.
