Overnight hiking - now sleeping does not count even if it is freezing out

Aw, now, c'mon - it was an unheated bunkhouse! It was solidly below zero overnight, conservatively at 5-10 below. But okay, if you insist, I won't count those points, even if I was awake almost the whole night...

I got 2220 points in actual hiking time. My summit trip was right at 0 almost the whole way, but the jump of a multiplier between x4 and x8 seemed so huge that I just pegged it at 1* and did the lower multiplier. There was absolutely no wind and the snow falling was so pretty that I didn't count it - a fantastically perfect weekend all around.

I think, if we run this next year, we should maybe alter the point scheme a bit - I've gotten both absurdly high and absurdly low numbers just because of where things fell within the range. What about doing a five point spread, so like 0-5, 5-10, etc. with smaller jumps in the multiplier? I gotta say, there's a pretty significant difference between 14* and 1*, yet they are the same points, but the difference between say, 1* and -2* is an artificially huge point spread. There are always going to be lines, but that one just seems too big. Anywho, something to think about.

Oh well, I decided to take a day off today so I slept late a bit. Woke up just to see it's -4F with 20mph winds. Damn that would have been good points

Lets hope it stays the same for tomorrow

HOLY CARP!!!! Good GOD, that's insane! That's to the point of getting unsafe to be out too long - be careful if you do venture out!

Was just below zero today (hovering around -1ish), but on tap was an easy walk to shake out my hiking muscles. I knew I'd get NO relaxing done in that cold, so I bagged it. Back to my regularly scheduled run tomorrow, crossed fingers for below zero again! I might try the trail run again - I bet the leaves are all crunchy from being so cold.

Oh, thought you guys might find this interesting. On my hike I was, of course, interested in the temps along the way. Three guys all had temp gauges hanging from their chest straps. I had one in the top of my pack, about a foot and some stuff from any part of my body.

The guys all read around 35-38*. Mine read at 18*. You can imagine how bundled up we were (not hugely as we weren't moving that fast, but a couple layers each), and the gauges were each hanging free of their chests, so not actually touching them. Yet, within about an inch of their bodies it was 20* warmer than around on the backside of our packs. Crazy how much heat we give off, huh?! No wonder layering is so hard in the winter.

I need to rack up the points this week, since next week I will be in the Bahamas and I am 100% sure I won't get any crappy weather points there :p

We got another 3 - 4" of snow over night. I put some sheet metal screws in a pair of old running shoes, this morning a got to try them out, they work great!

Love running in snow, this made it a whole lot easyer, not slipping.

Totally chickened out on my run - it was over 30 and I was looking for an excuse! Ha!

Has anyone else noticed, in reading the rest of the board, that when people say, "Oh I couldn't possibly run, it was 25 degrees" that you find yourself smiling just a bit?

Yeah, I do. But I also find, as you have found, if it is over 35 I am like, well why would I want to go for a run, I will save it for when it gets cold. However, if the roads are clear and it is over 35 I am totally motivated to get on my bike, which is a good thing.

Hmmm....might have to try that. I only run on the dry pavement...in the middle of the road if I have to!!! I cannot run in the slippy snow...it hurts my hips.

I had to get my run in while it was still cold enough, and just barely made it! It got up to 52 freakin' degrees today! Ugh, I'm so disgusted with this winter so far. Today was a nasty rain, too, solid and gross with a warm wind. I guess that's better than a cold wind, but it just felt wrong and icky. Yuck.

Hee hee, I haven't gotten the brain freeze yet - I'll have to experience that one so I can commiserate! Too bad about the mailbox, dontcha hate it when they use our hardcore-ness against us?

Winter is here. 488 points for a lunch time run. Getting down to -20 C this weekend, lots of snow and wind. Got a long run planned for Sunday.

Looking for some BIG points.

OK I did it...39 minutes in -5F. Was actually not cold...but my lungs did protest an awful lot.

351 points for my run.....now if I had a yellow lab that needed twice daily walks maybe I'd catch up!

-15F, 12mph winds, officially too cold to run. Made it a 98 minutes. I was like Luke Skywalker on the planet Toth. It was cold.

D-d-d-d-d-damn! That's cold!

I was all set to run, and then it warmed up. To just barely above freezing. And turned all the glorious, beautiful, wonderful snow into ICE, puddles, a disgusting mess. Nasty, nasty ice storm. So instead of running through the slop, I spent my morning responding to fire calls (no fires in our town, but flooded basements, carbon monoxide from generators, log truck in a power line, etc.) before heading for a friend's house who had power. Yuck, yuck, yuck.

Then yesterday, while I didn't much WANT to run, I was headed out when I realized that everything was iced over. As in, couldn't move iced over. My yak-trax couldn't grip, and I didn't think running in crampons would be a good idea. Grrr. This winter, which held such beautiful promise in the forecasts, has been a bitter disappointment so far.

I think I reached my temperature limit this morning, it was -11F

After walking Brewer for 15 minutes, not sure if it was too cold for him or not, he never complaines.

I wend for a 37 min run. I wore a face mask and was having a lot of trouble breathing with it over my mouth. When I pulled it down my face would get cold. I don't think I got as good of a workout as I could have if I would have done the tredmill. I did get more points though.

Yeah, I didn't use a face mask on Sunday, because I have a goatee. Which helped, for about 70 minutes, after which all the snow and condensation from my breath that had caught in my goatee TURNED TO ICE. So there I am running with a friggin ice cube hanging from my chin. Was a great run until then, legs were a little cold but feet were warm, head was warm, hands were warm. Once that iceburg formed though, I could have shrivled up into a little ball.
