The more you run trails, the more confident you'll get about the rocks and roots.  Also, your stabilizer muscles get a workout.  My ankles are worlds stronger because I do all my truly long-distance runs on trails.  Most people have a slower pace than running on the road.  If it gives an idea, the first overall finisher at the trail marathon last weekend (I only did the half) came in at 3:34:19.  The first female finisher came in at 5:16:46.

Then again, the marathon route had just under 15,000' of climbing.

biggsmoothe - 2008-11-08 5:54 PM my garmin measured the whole race at almost exactly 8 miles.  i know from riding out there that the loops are indeed 3.5 miles, but i guess with the parking lot start and running to and from the trail it bumped the mileage up to 8.

Cool...that makes me feel a lot better about my time.

Still no results, as of Nov 10 at close to 4PM...

Wonder if they had problems. It normally doesn't take this long to post them.

My Garmin showed 8.11 miles and not really an easy 8 miles at that. Great run...nothing beats the trails.

Results are finally posted:

Looks like the overall winner ran (almost) 53 minutes.

That is crazy fast on that terrain, especially since a few of you with garmins said the distance as really 8 miles...

Like I said earlier, lots of fun, but one of the hardest races I've ever done...

That was one of the most challenging races I'd done.  It was very mentally taxing as well as physically since I had to stay very alert...no zoning out!  Definitely made me question whether I can do Red Top Rumble.

The winner was Greg Mason  (I think) with a time of 52 mins and some change.  Using Athlinks it appears our champion ran a sub 15 minute 5k in September.  I'd say the race was extremely tough!   I don't think the Red Top Rumble is anywhere near that tough.  It is longer, but most of it isn't as technical as what it sounds like you endured raced.

If there's anyone who enjoyed the challenge of the course and is trained to do a 1/2 marathon, there's a race at Heritage Park in Watkinsville on Thanksgiving weekend. It's a very, very similar course to Big Creek. I ran it last year and it was tough! I would run it again but it was definitely a challenge.

I intend of finding out where Greg Mason will be running next...that way, I can skip it! :P

That d00d is a beast...I was checking out his athlinks race results... Most of his 5ks are 15 mins or under. that's some hard running.
