Subject: BIke dismount poll--dominant hand?
While I was volunteering as a bike handler at IMFL yesterday, I noticed something interesting. No matter what foot they unclip first, most people dismount to the left of the bike (the opposite side of the gears). I'm wondering if it has something to do with the dominant hand, especially since I'm one of the rare right-sided dismounters and I'm also left-handed.

So...take the poll! Which hand is dominant, and which side do you dismount on?

I'm right handed, but I always dismount on the left. My left side is more stable in general. I actually think I lean a bit to the left when I'm on the bike. My left hand is always the one that gets tingly fingers, never my right.

Right handed, dismount on the left.  I think it's because my right leg is also dominant, so I'm more comfortable swinging my right leg over the top bar, both getting on and off the bike

Another right handed, left side dismounter here. Not sure why... just 'feels' right.

Right handed dismount on left side: learned it like that as a kid, avoids the gears, and way we do it in cyclocross.

2 reasons to go over the left side no matter your dominate hand. First is of course no gears so no chance of getting cut. Second is that once off and running, still no gears to cut and you are using your RIGHT hand to handle bike. If you are going to do a flying dismount, step through with right foot between bike and left foot to help a great deal. Try both ways, you will see. That on move will completely allow you to see why you dismount on left side

If you really try on gear side, bring bandages.

Most people mount horses from the left side also.  Probably trying to stay away from the gearsWink

I think I'm one of those weird people that do things opposite. I'm right handed and breathe left swimming and apparently dismounting right is uncommon for biking too.

I bat and golf right though, so I'm not a total freak I guess.

I just fall down, then pick my bike up with my right hand as I wipe off the blood with my left!

It's a practical thing.  Always dismount on the left.  Otherwise you run the risk of getting chainringed .......

Right handed but can't seem to get either leg to clear the seat after the bike leg. Must be the seat.

Now that the topic came up I do dismount on the left.

I am right handed, and I dismount to the left. Reason for it, I have had my ACL replaced in my left knee so my right leg has more flexibility to get over the seat, and maneuver around my left leg while on the side of the bike. I step off the bike with my right foot.

Unclip right foot about 50m from dismount - continue to soft pedal - swing right leg over to left side about 20m from dismount while coasting - stop at dismount line, unclip left foot and start running.

Oh, and I'm right handed.
