I just signed up for the NYC tri in July 2009!!!

I've never done anything like this before. I can run a 10K, bike 30 Miles and I used to swim competitively, but I need to get back in the pool.

Wondering if anyone is out there from NYC or if anyone has done the NYC Tri.

Hi Megan, welcome! I did my first tri season this year and NYC was the first race I signed up for as well. I had never had a swimming lesson in my life when I signed up so I was about as first-timer as it gets! I ended up doing a sprint on Staten Island for practice first and I'm glad I did.

The NYC tri is a great race, I'm doing it again in '09 as well. Stop by the New York forum and join our discussions so you can get to know some local people. You'll find a lot of good advice here, it's a great support group for someone just getting started!

Welcome to the insanity!! Not from NYC (Long Island) and never did NYC Tri, but there are a lot of fellow BTers who are from NYc and many others who have done the NYC tri.  Sounds like you're way ahead of the beginner curve, certainly way ahead of where I was.  Good advice about doing a tri earlier in the year to get a "feel" for the whole thing.

Use the search features and you will find tons of info about NYC tri..stop by NY forum as well and say hello.

Hi Meg, welcome!!      This year will be My first NYC Tri also, but like the other two said, try to get a sprint or other short distance Tri under your belt before NYC, it will make a very big difference in your race experience if you have never done a Tri before. That advice was also given to me this past summer for other races i did and i was glad i listened. And make sure you get some OWS in before the race if you have never swam in Open Water as it is night and day compared to a pool.  OH and HAVE FUN!!!!

Hi Meg-

I am doing the NYC Tri next year for the first time also. It should be fun.

I did 2 sprints last year. They were my first triathlons. Once you do it, you will be hooked.

I agree with the other comments. It would be good to do a sprint tri before you do NYC. I am doign one in Wykoff, NJ, in the spring. There are quite a few in Harriman State park in June. I did one last year -- the bike is very hilly!

Good luck and have fun.

Hi Meg:

This will be my third year doing the NYC Nautica -happy to offer any advice or answer any questions you might have. It's a great race and was also my first ever triathlon in 2007. You're gonna have a blast! Be sure to check out some race reports from last year -they really help to get and idea of what to expect.

Happy Training!

Michelle

X2 on Harriman. The swim there is always warm and it has an awesome biking course with barely any car traffic. My first three triathlons were all done at Harriman last year, and by the time I did my first Olympic distance, it was a lot easier.

Welcome!

Good luck Meg.  I'm in the same boat - signed up for NYC as my first triathlon.  I was a good distance runner in high school before my leg injuries kept me from running at the next level, but I've never done much swimming or biking.  Hopefully I'll find a sprint to do before NYC just to figure out what in the world I'm doing!
