Subject: Am I Really Going To Do This AGAIN?

Hey Everyone!

Well, after seeing my wife cross the finish line at the Florida Ironman last weekend (she's LisaF in the Beginner Triathlete forums) I've decided to get back into the Triathlon scene. I tell you, the WHOLE experience was truly amazing and awesome and I realized that I am going to enjoy and live my life to the fullest! I also had the pleasure of meeting some great people from the Beginner Triathlete site that weekend (Hi everyone).

I am now 42 years old and my wife and I both started in Triathlon while dating ten years ago in Texas. We both just did sprint distances back then but she has since surpassed that and has completed Olympic, half Ironman and now an Ironman. My last tri was in 2000 and I basically quit doing them because I really, I mean REALLY hate to swim plus we had two new children born and a job relocation. I've tried to keep some form of physical activity by running and since 2004 I've completed a bunch of 5 & 10Ks, a couple of half marathons, and the Memphis St. Jude Marathon in 2006.

I'm looking forward to the participation with everyone on this site and the camaraderie of the Triathlon community.

I CAN DO THIS again, right?

You absolutely can do it again!

I did a lot of tri's in the early 90's, then we moved and started new jobs, and our girls got into their own activities (translation - I became a chauffeur). I did a couple of short adventure races in the late 90's, a few 5 and 10ks along the way, and then became a couch potato after tearing my ACL.  At 46, I decided to get back into it, and did 3 sprints this year.  So even with a big gap it is possible to come back.  And I used to be a terrible swimmer - BOP completely (as in I would get out of the water at least 2 waves behind my starting wave), but this year I am more solidly a MOP swimmer.  Not sure what that means, but it is nice to see the times improve in SOMETHING!

Yes, you can.

I did my first 10K at 46 and tri at 47.

That's cool your wife did IMFL last week.  My swim partner does it every year.

Absolutely, not saying it is ever easy but hey, what worthwhile comes without a price. Welcome and good luck!

You don't sound that different from me. I did a couple of Duathlons/Centuries in college and then dropped out because of work and family.

My wife started training a couple of years ago, and I decided I had to keep up. Now, at 42, I'm going to be doing my first Ironman next week.

Best of luck and welcome to the site!

I saw a lot of couples cross the finish line together at IMFL this year. Something to consider in your future too?

Welcome to BT.

Welcome back! My hate (and fear) of the swim is what turned me away from triathlon a couple of years ago but I dream about IM always. I tried to convince myself that I will be happy just doing a full marathon for my 40th birthday (august 2010) but doing an IM for 40 has been a dream for so many years that I have to power through.

Both of my parents suffered horribly illnesses for years before they died and as morbid as it might sound, knowing they had to struggle with something they hated (treatments) to get to something good (a little more living) puts a few hours in the pool into perspective.

It will have to help that your wife is so accomplished. What a great motivator!

Good luck,

--leslie

Hey, great to hear of someone else in the same boat...but you have done outstanding to be doing IM Arizona. My sister in law lives in Phoenix and will be doing the race also. Good Luck and enjoy the experience. Can you send me your bib # so we can follow your progress?
