Hi!

Maybe in America it is a "physical therapist."  Is that what you  mean?  :-)  Someone who treats muscular injuries?

Hmm.. what country are you in? Now I am curious.

Danett

Possible - they specialise in a range of areas including sports medicine, neck, back, spine so I think its much the same...

Medically qualified and look at muscles primary...

Oh Im in Australia

Subject: RE: Doc said, "no triathlons" - follow-up

Hi!

I just wanted to tell everyone that I went to go see Dr. Metzel today and he said that I could return back to running.  He also is sending me to a sports physical therapy place for strengthening, etc.  Although that was the fastest doctor appointment I've ever had, he seems to really know his stuff - was encouraging and empowering - and said that he could "fix me right up" and that the other doctor gave "very bad advice."  He said he did not see why I would not be able to do triathlons.

You know, the other doctor was more 'warm and fuzzy' and met with me for a lot longer - but he didn't send me to a physical therapy place or anything like that.  He was just discouraging.  This doctor may have met with me more briefly but he was very encouraging and seemed to be very interested in fixing my problem and getting me on my way. (And definitely encourages an active lifestyle.)  Sometimes "best doctor" doesn't mean touchy-feely, but "best" could mean 'knows his stuff really well' and can actually help you.

Anyway, I was very happy about that and that really made my day.  The man has a staff of at least ten people on his own.  So it was interesting to say the least.  AND I did not have to wait to see him.  (I was shocked.)  But when I got out - that lobby was PACKED.

Thanks everyone for supporting me.  I was SOOOOO upset before.

with care,

Danett

I was diagnosed with runner's knee last year while I was marathon training.  I  saw a sports med doc and he gave me the best treatment plan ever- wall sits.  He told me to do 10 x 30 secs wall sits per day, avoid legs machines at the gym (legg press, extensions, etc), and to bike in an easy gear for strengthening.  Since I build muscle and strength very easily I only had to take about 2 weeks off from running.  Once my quads were stronger I haven't had any knee problems since.  Runner's knee is very treatable IMO and there's no reason why you can't do tri's.  Try the wall sits- I swear they work!
