OK, so I test rode a bunch of bikes today and I had hoped that one would jump out and choose me but heres my dilema. There were two that I liked the best - I could either go with the Cervelo Dual for $1700 and they throw in a free QR wetsuit (any in stock) or a Guru Cron/Alu which felt as good or better, but doesn't have as good components (shimano 105, R500 wheels) for $1300 and use the extra $ for a wetsuit or maybe better pedals, carbon seatstay, etc... I figure I'd probably be happy whichever way I go but I thought I'd see if anyone had any sage advice that doesn't have to do with color.

I'm assuming the Dual is the slow blue Ultegra 10 model at that price, means a much better component group than the 105 on the other bike, sounds like the better deal if you need the wetsuit.

By the way, I'm pretty sure carbon seatstays are not an aftermarket add-on.

First of all, you and The Bear look like you're related to one another.  Secondly, I'd go with the better components.  Both framesets are solid.  But, the Ultegra compoments are the drive train, the heart of the bike, and will figure in greatly to your performance and the life expectancy of the bike itself.

By the way, I think you meant "cabon seatpost".  If it came down to Ultegra vs. better pedals and seatpost with 105's, I'd definitely go Ultegra.

I'm with Karl...go with the Ultegra components. You can ride the fanciest looking bike in the world, but as soon as you start having shifting problems, you will be swearing a blue streak and forgetting all about the "carbon this and titanium that."

Hmm. Well I did have salmon for dinner last night. And yes I did mean seatpost. I don't know how you would go about changing out the seatstay but I'm sure there would be some pretty steep labor charges...

I have seen that the Guru frame is comparable to the P3 frame, so for arguments sake, are the ultegra parts worth the extra $400 if I would be geting a better frame with the Guru (they did have an ultegra Guru for $2000)? And not that it matters since they are both equally fast until I buy one, but the Guru is red.

I don't know about the Cron'Alu being comparable to a P3. The Crono or maybe even the Trilite if you're comparing Al to Al, but the Cron'Alu looks like a match to the Dual. I'm personally partial to the Dual myself (maybe because I ordered one), but for the price I'd say it's a tossup. The wetsuit though pushes me back toward the Dual. But if you really want to follow in the Bear's footsteps go with the slow one.

To aleviate my curiosity I just did an experiment which turned out to be useless, but for the effort I still want to share

I ran a basic search and found an Ultegra 9 speed upgrade package for $620. The only Ultegra 10 group package I could find was $1020 w/ a wheelset. The only 105 kits I could find were $800 with an added wheelset, bar and stem. For a simple thread reply I'm not going out and pricing all the individual parts However it was so hard to find an apples to apples kit comparison for the price I just gave up...

So depending on how you look at the pricing, the upgrade might be worth it. Take a hundred bucks off the 105 to account for the bar and stem and compare apples to apples with the ultegra 10 package, and you've got a $300 difference right there. If the wheel upgrade is worth another $100, and throw in the wetsuit, you've got a definite deal on the Dual.

I haven't heard too many complaints about the 105, Tigra yes will let you down. The 105 is usually where people go when their Tiagra failed on a key hill. Everyone agrees on the ultegra 10 though. It's as solid as they come. I've even heard a comparisons to dura ace.

I would like to see the source which shows you that the ChronAlu is comparable to the p3.

Just a quick review of one site (www.texascyclesport.com) shows the 105 gruppo (8 pieces: STI® Flight-deck® levers with cables, bottom bracket, crankset with 39-53 teeth, brake calipers - front and rear, cassette, chain, front derailleur and rear derailleur) retails for $460 while the Ultegra 10 group was just over $1000. Also look at the wheels and handlebars of the two bikes.

Actually, I've heard more than favorable comparisons. Ultegra is constructed of the same design as Dura Ace, but DA uses lighter materials. These can also be less durable.

Well I guess they weren't saying they're comparable, but that Guru "took their cue" from the P3 on a couple of things although I don't see it. It turns out the free wetsuit deal is moot since they have quite a few, but none in my size. Still leaning towards the Dual, although the Guru did feel nice, Thanks for the help.

Still think, in this case, that the Dual is a better value, provided they both fit and feel the same. And if they force you to take the wetsuit, see if they have one in the bear's size.
