I am curious what you guys think. I think I will be following the BT beginner IM training program for this upcoming year and was wondering what the timing should be for my HIM in the program. I want to do it about 6-7 weeks out from the race, Is this good spacing or should I shoot for some other time. Thanks.

Moab,

If you are new to IM then I would do the HIM months (rather than weeks) out from the IM.  No closer than 10 weeks.

If you are experienced at IM, and recover fast, then up to 3 weeks out can work.  However, I prefer 7 weeks out.

Hope this helps,

I did Eagleman in the middle of June and IMLP was the end of July, so about 6 weeks in between.  The caveat for me??  Eagleman was actually the BEGINNING of my IM training for the race, so I only really got 5 weeks or so of real training in for the IM. Surprised

(Since Eagleman was epic heat/humidity I actually dropped out after less than a mile into the run knowing I would not be able to run the whole thing, so I shortened my recovery significantly and actually rode a 100 miler the next weekend).

No coach (certainly not gordo) and not a speedy racer (certainly not Daremo), so with a grain of salt.....

I wanted one as well (I had done 2 already) in prep for IMAZ (first IM), only one I could reasonably schedule time and money wise was 5 weeks out.  Ideal?  Probably not, but I approached it as an IM training day to get pacing and nutrition down.  I did not taper going into it, in fact had a 90 mile bike the sat before and a 20 mile run the monday before.  I kept to my IM pace (actually, IM effort) and just went slow, yet still PRd by 25 minutes.  And it was a fairly difficult course with lots of climbing on the bike, which came in handy at flattish IMAZ, if I could properly pace that HIM I could do the same at IMAZ

It kind of messed with the last 5 weeks, instead of a last 2 week build and 3 week taper, I had a .5 week recovery, 1.5 week build and a 3 week taper.

I don't think it affected my IMAZ performance, since I came in pretty much where I thought I would.

Yeah I am new to IM. I have done 3 HIM's but this will be my first big one. Thanks for the advice. I will start looking for an earlier one.

That has happened to me several times. I go to the post and find that someone who is much more experienced than I gives his advice and say to myself "Why would anyone listen to me when this guy has just helped." So I just skip the whole thing.

Keep sharing -- if you go into the rec.sport.triathlon archives then you'll find some pretty entertaining stuff I posted in the early days!  I learn a tremendous amount from my novice athletes.

I think as important as how quickly you recover is how hard to tend to race.  There is a big difference in recovery time between a training run of 13 miles and race of 13 miles and big difference between a training ride of 56 miles and a race of 56 miles.

So if your tendancy is to go balls to the wall and leave everything you've got out on the course, it's gonna take longer to recover than if you race it for fun and as a good training opportunity to work on logistics, transitions and nutrition/hydration plans.

I have a different motivation for doing a HIM on the road to my IM.  I'm gonna do a HIM relatively early in the season to put me in good starting fitness for my IM training.  Kinda of a little more motivation to build my base before I ramp up to IM training mileage.

I am doing Black Bear HIM, 8 weeks out from IMLP.  This will be my first IM, but I am not planning to "race" the HIM per se, I am approaching it as a long, hilly, training day.  Good luck!!

Well after looking a little I have found a good early HIM that I will be doing. I will go easy and practice nutrition and pacing. It is only an hour away so no night away from the family or big money for travel

I'm doing an IM at the end of June and am trying to schedule a tune-up HIM beforehand. I was using the search function because I know this issue had been discussed before and this seemed to be about the most helpful thread on the subject, so I thought I'd look for some input here (figure it's been dead long enough that I'm not really hijacking).

I have two options for my HIM. One race 7 weeks out (Jerseyman HIM), one 3 weeks out (Revolution3 HIM). Jerseyman is kind of a nightmare logistically (I'm a college student with his last final exam ending 10pm the night before and a 2.5hr drive the morning of the race to get there). The Revolution3 is easy logistically, but obviously cuts it a little close time wise. I've done one HIM before (Timberman last year in 5:20). I was able to recover for a PR in an oly distance race 4 weeks later, and I feel like I'm in much better shape now so I could recover more quickly. This will be my first IM and I don't have any time-related goals.

If you guys think Rev3 is too close, would doing their Aquabike division also be too much? While I'd prefer to do a full HIM, I might be willing to compromise and do this.

That's what I did and it worked out well.  IM was mid-July, did a HIM mid-April and I used it to practice pacing (main thing) and nutrition.  The HIM was also the first time I'd traveled and stayed overnight for a race so that was good practice too.
