Okay, I have the regular drop down handle bars you see on the vast majority of bikes....and I don't like them....1 hour into the ride and I am constantly regripping to get comfortable...my MTB handlebars are more comfortable than this....my whole upperbody is leaning on them of course...I think I should have bars that would allow me to grip as if I was holding a steering wheel...maybe it is just a matter of getting used to but the more I ride, the more I am bothered by this.....anybody else feel this way....suggestions? I am going into my LBS and get some ideas this week....I am not putting up with this....

Regripping, for comfort, is what drop handlebars were designed for!  I suppose that they are like anything else and would require some getting used to.  I cannot remember because I have been riding drop bars for so many decades.  I am the opposite of you in that I cannot comfortably ride straight bars; they seem "unnatural" to me.

What about the handle bas you see on some tri bikes like QR, do they call them cowbars?

These so-called "cow bars" are on triathlon bikes.  The reason for having these is that although you ride in the aero position on the flats, you still need to anchor yourself solidly in a road position in order to climb hills.

Could they be fit to a road bike or is the geometry off for that? Does anybody do this?

The pursuit style bars simulate riding on the hoods. This might work with a shorter stem but your committed to this setup. You see quite a few bike couriers riding this style bar as it's more comfortable.
