Expert 713 Lake in the Hills, IL | Subject: Vacation during IM training Ok so it looks like I will be taking a 4 day trip in May. I am doing the BT IM 20 week beginner program and it is set to start April 13th. I believe the trip will be the 3rd or 4th weeken of the month. What are your guys feelings on this. Is it a terrible idea or might it be good to get away for about 4 days. I doubt there will be much chance to do any type of training while away. Let me know what you think. |

Champion 10154 Alabama | Subject: RE: Vacation during IM training 1. IM training takes away from family time. 2. Vacations are family time....a chance to reconnect, plug back in, give the family the attention they deserve and make family number 1 again. 3. 4 days missed out of a 20 week program is nothing. If you are concerned, start your 20 week a week earlier and allow for the down-week in your plan. 4. A short break in the middle of training usually does the body good
Last year we were on vacation for about 10 days right in the middle of my IM training. I ran a couple of times (while the family slept) and I swam once. Other than that, I focused on having fun with the family. ~Mike |

Veteran 252 peoria, az | Subject: RE: Vacation during IM training X2" what they said ^^^^ My husband told me he booked a cabin for the weekend right in the heart of my IM training and I freaked out. He did it to surprise me and I yelled "I'm not surprisable (sp) right now" I have a long bike ride and run to do!!!!" But, after I chilled out and re-worked my schedule it was the best weekend to re-connect with family and not think about Ironman for a long weekend. Things are going to happen. Your gonna have stuff come up. Relax, take the time, and enjoy yourself. Your body, your mind, and your family will thank you. Edited by LisaF 2008-12-04 7:10 AM |

Elite 2552 Evans, GA | Subject: RE: Vacation during IM training On the other hand, a short run or swim away from home can be fun. I went ot Lake Champlain during IMFL and I swam in the lake and around a wildlife preserve on an island. If your SO works out as well it can be a fun energizer for the weekend. |

Pro 4675 Wisconsin near the Twin Cities metro | Subject: RE: Vacation during IM training Take your running shoes and shorts and if you can, squeeze in a quick run here and there - play it by ear. IM training is about building durable legs and you can't do that by not doing anything for 4 days. On the other hand, it won't be the end of the world if you take it off. My 2 cents. |

Champion 9407 Montague Gold Mines, Nova Scotia | Subject: RE: Vacation during IM training As you are a gold member and following a BT plan, I would ask the coaches there about how to approach your training in terms of scheduling around your vacation. In general, it is definitely not a bad thing to get away; I would take your shoes and maybe a pair of goggles but if you are unable to get any sessions in, it's not going to be a big deal. Enjoy the vacation and come back fresh ready for the next four months Shane |

Expert 762 Missouri | Subject: RE: Vacation during IM training For IMCDA this year, we took a 5 day vacation to Colorado for skiiing, tubing, snowmobile etc. . for those 5 days, all I did was those activities. . and IMCDA turned out just fine for me. So basically you are about in the same boat as me time wise into the training with the vacation and all. Take your running shoes and a swimsuit/goggles. . try to sneak in some activity if the vacation is non-activity vacation. Long story short. . you will be fine. |

Champion 10471 Dallas, TX | Subject: RE: Vacation during IM training If you have a good base under you going into IM training it shouldn't be a big deal. I can't really tell from your Logs what your training history is though. I know for me, when I started my 8 months of training for my IM, I freaked when I had to miss a training session. So did my coach. And when I hit the full on training 4 months out from the race, there is no way I would have taken 4 days off. That's just me. Doesn't mean that needs to be you. Only you can make that decision based on your fitness level. BBBUUUTTTT... I also went into my training with a so-so base and I'm not a very good cyclist or runner. So for me, missing workouts was a big deal. Like somone else said, why not start training a week early? |

Iron Donkey 38643 , Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Vacation during IM training I've been planning my two 20-week programs with my coach, and have noted that our family always takes a vacation the first full week of August due to our sitter, but I already talked it over with my wife regarding that week, and noting that is when I will be 4 weeks out from IM Moo and it will be my biggest training week. More discussion of what we'll do will continue (for the good, though). |

So for me, missing workouts was a big deal. Like somone else said, why not start training a week early? I may start a week early. I feel I have a pretty good base. I just finished my 3rd marathon in October and also did my third HIM in a PR of 5:14 this year. Not super fast but good enough for what I am willing to put in. I have already started my base training and hope to be ahead of the game when the training plan starts. That is at least the plan. I also have an 8 month old at home that is the real dictator of what happens and when. So we shall see. I have never followed any of the plans I have ever done 100 %. I have always skipped a couple workouts here and there. What I try to focus on is getting in the long stuff for sure. Hitting all of the tempo work and then trying to get in what I can of the rest. I am usually pretty good at getting most of it. |
