Subject: Beginner Friendly Bike Race

I'm new at this, but I'd like to try a bike race. Beginner friendly for newbies and slowbies like me. Short distance. Any recommendations?

I'm working on upping my bike mileage. Only doing 10-12 miles for my "long ride" now. Trying to get to 15 miles this month.

How many miles do I need to be riding before I can find a race? I mean, are there any really short races out there or are they all 30+ miles?

One more thing, I'm on a 10-speed mtn bike. I'm sure that's not helping my speed any but right now I can't afford to buy a bike. This economy scares me. So I'm cutting back. But my bike is fine. I rode it in Rambling Rose and had no problems.

I'm really slow. Like 10-11mph. Working on it, but I'm not seeing much progress yet. Hopefully as I ride more that will get better.

So with all this as background, do you think there's a race out there for a rider like me?

Are you looking for a tri that is not too long on the bike? Or are you looking for just a bike race? I've never done a bike race. There are some charity rides, which is really just a group ride with support along the course. The shortest I've seen is an MS trainging ride of 15 miles.

Since you are on a mountain bike you could look into those races.

Have you increased the air pressure in your tires? Check the sidewall, but 40 psi helped when I was training on a mountain bike. There are tris with short bike legs. Azalea is 10 miles. I've heard that some races have a "fat tire" division, but I haven't seen it at any NC races.

I am looking for short bike races. I plan to sign up for several sprint tris. All with short bike rides of course. But I was wondering if there's a race/ride for someone my level. Group ride sounds like a possiblity. As does charity ride. I'll Google it and see if I find a charity ride that fits my abilities.

I'll look into it. The Azalea sprint too. Thanks.

I did the Tour de Cure ride last year and rode the 25K option.  I had only been road riding for about 2-3 months.  There were all kinds of bikes from cruisers to serious road bikes.

It was great fun and very well supported with motor ccle marshals, frequent rest stops and food/beverages.

I also did the MS Bike Tour 2 day ride at Callaway Gardens (GA).  It was excellent!!!  A very well run event.  I did the 35 mile option on day 1 and 26 on day 2.  It was a great ride!

Check some of your local YMCA's as well because many times they have flyers posted with these type of bike ride events.

There have been a couple recently that I was going to do but decided not to.  One was a nearby YMCA and they had like a 10 mile or 10k fun ride, a 20 mile and a 30 mile distance ...(plus a little 1/4 mile track or something that the little tikes could ride their tricycles on ...)

It was more of a charity ride, but they still did give out prizes for the top finishers ... but a large part of the field was just out there to raise money and enjoy a fun, friendly group ride.

Also, check some local bike shops, they may have some info and flyers as well.

I think you are mistaken a charity ride as a bike race. Two of them are totally different.
I don't want to sound harsh but if I were you I would not even think of bike races yet. They are high speed affairs with tight pack riding and averaging 20 miles/hour+ even for the Cat 5 who are beginner racers.
Good Luck

I work for the Red Cross in High Point, NC.  We have a ride every year called the Tour de Furniture.  It will be in it's 11th year this coming year.  It's held  the first Saturday in August and probably by August, you will be more experienced, but there are several levels.  There's a 10 Mile, 50 Mile, 50K and 100K.  Very well supported.  Just a ride though, not a race.

That's what I'm thinking of doing. The Diabetes ride. MS Bike Tour sounds interesting too. Are you doing both of those again?
