I too am signed up for my first Ironman.  I had a great time volunteering at this year's race.  The best part was Paula Newby-Fraser taking my registration for IMFL09!

I am doing base work training until Feb/Mar timeframe when my 36 week training program kicks in.

My wife's comment to me is "Death before DNF"..... Smile

Culgray - 2008-12-16 4:54 PM I am training for the New Orleans 70.3 in April.

A bunch of people in my club are doing that one, including several coaches. It doesn't fit into my timeline, but, it is going to be a great race!

This will be my first IM.  I am currently doing an 8 week base period for the New Orleans 70.3 in April.  I plan to take a couple weeks off after that race to rejuvenate and then start back at the base period for IMFL.   I know it is a long season but I think with discipline and taking the rest period in between the 2 "A" races I should be in good shape.

I'll be there with Culgray!!  This will be my 2nd IM (1st was IM CdA this year).  My Florida Gators tri top is on order!!!

It will be my first Ironman also.  I also had a great time volunteering at this year's race and Paula Newby-Fraser took my registration for IMFL09 also.  I asked her to autograph my registration form and she did.

I am training for a HIM in May.  Then I will take a couple of weeks "off" before I start my IM training plan.  I plan to do a HIM as a tune-up in September also.

First Ironman.  Doing California 70.3 in April, then some sprints and the NYC Tri in July, looking at Duke 1/2 as a tune up in Sept then 140.6 on Nov 7, 2009!

I have been taking it easy after NYC marathon in November, just some fun rides/runs and races.  Today started my 1/2 training plan with 20 weeks to go until CA.  Plan on a 20 week IM plan starting in June.

 I am STOKED for 2009!

What airport is best to fly into and where is the best place to stay?

First IM for me as well. Planning on White Lake Half (NC) in May, taking a couple weeks off and then back into it. There is a small IM distance race called Chesapeakeman (MD) for any of you East Coasters that want an Aqua Velo tune up right before IMFL.

Cheers!

Panama City has a small airport.  You can also fly into Ft Walton Beach (VPS) which is about 30 min away, or fly into Pensacola which is about 1 hr + away.  I have heard Tallahassee (sp?) mentioned before, but that is much further than the other three options.

Im in for IMFL. It will be my 3rd IM with IMKY 08 being my first and IMKY 09 will be my second. I volunteered at IMFL 08 and it was a lot of fun. I knew nobody but had a great time as a bike handler. Any thoughts on the swim having a brief run to start the second lap?? Does that take you out of your groove? The swim is my least favorite so it will be a tease for me to get out then have to get in again.

Never did an IM so take this with a grain of salt.

Personally I like the little change when you have to get out of the water to start the second loop on the swim. Gives me 2 chances to walk as fast as others are swimming in the shallow water

Doin' great, despite the "cold" 50 degree weather here in FL. I'm itching for tri season to start so I can have a purpose again!

I'm in week 10 for the New Orleans 70.3.  8 weeks of base and 2 weeks into the build.  Need to get more intervals and speedwork in to increase leg turnover.  What's weird, is that it is 50 degrees in Florida and 45 here in Salt Lake.  I consider it warm now and can't wait to get outside instead of the treadmill and trainer.Cool

Getting some great cycling and running base building going.  I'll tackle the Austin 1/2 Mary in Feb for a nice fun race, and then have both the Lone Star HIM beginning of April and the Boston Mary late April...I think I should be well prepped for both of those with some great base underneath me to really tackle May forward for IM training!  We are under the 300 day count...293 days to go till game time! It's gonna be great (this is one of those I'm confident days...other days I'm completely petrified!! haha!)

Psssh I wish it was 50! I think the high here in VA is supposed to be 30 today. I did 2 hours on the trainer instead of out in the cold last Sunday .. instead of numb limbs, I had a numb mind =P

Things are starting to crank up. I ran my first marathon last week and now am focusing on cycling and swimming. Thank goodness the cold snap is done.....Here in GA we had sub 20 degree temps  which this warm blooded southern boy did not like.

How many of "ya'll" have coaches vs how many are self coached? Also, what plan are you following (A BT plan, a plan from another source, etc).

I have a coach. I've known him for almost a year and used his stock plan for a couple of OLYs last year. He is now putting together a personalized training plan which will kick off next week. Yikes!!!!!

Happy training!

I am a coach...but I also have a coach   IMO, coaching is the way to go, especially for the IM distance!  It's good to have an outside, objective perspective on your training.  Hope the mary went well for you...now the fun stuff will start happening

Hmmm..seems like lots of folks are ramping up their training already! My first race, a HIM is in July so Im still taking it easy. Should I not be taking it easy? Im just maintaining my bike and run and taking a little break from swimming till mid-Feb. I'm confident I'll get that back quickly. Well, happy training everyone! Can't wait till the warm weather hits! It was 43 the other day and it felt warm enough to open all the windows and let in some fresh air - I didn't though

Ok...random IMFL thought for the day....I wasn't going to work out at lunch, i was thinking that i would just chill in car and listen to music in parking lot a work.  Then I said to myself...Matt you have an Ironman you are signed up for in November...so i got right up and went to Gym.  Instead of my normal 5 miles i ran 5.5.

It is amazing what signing up for an ironman does to your motivation.  I swear, once you sign up for the race there is not a day that goes by you don't think about it.  I thought that might pass after i did one..but apparantly not.

You aren't lying...I haven't done an IM yet, but let me tell you that my mantra in this base training phase, when I've had workouts I didn't want to do or didn't want to wake up early for, etc. has been "It'll make you an Ironman...It'll make you an Ironman"  AND "An Ironman wouldn't quit."

There are also days I'm excited about it, and there have been days I'm petrified about it...and maybe it's less the day itself, and more the training I know I will need to do in order to make race day successful (it's the 100 mile training rides that I think intimidate me the most).

277 days.

Anyone lining up your condos yet?

Heard you could get a nice one on the water for just $250 a month even a month before the race.

Am thinking with the economy the way it is they wont be selling out any time soon if at all.
