Oope! I'm in. Not gonna book flights until a couple months out though... Want to see how the training goes, since i'm returning from wayback. Also, a friend of a friend has a timeshare out there, might see about that.

Btw, my race number ended up being an important PIN number & Grandpa's address.... Had to change the PIN number..

We are flying into Cancun now as well. We kept waiting for Frontier airlines to post their fall schedules and were finally told that they may not fly into Cozumel anymore. When we talked to the travel agent last week, we were informed that flights into Cozumel on either Wednesday or Thursday are getting pretty sparse. Also when we reserved our condo last week, the lady who did our reservation said they have never seen anything like this before as far as bookings go.

I am getting the impression that everyone is on the ball and getting their stuff reserved well ahead of time which could cause problems for people who wait to long. The last part I have to do is the car rental which is also turning out to be a major hassle. Small vehicles are the norm down there and hauling a bike in a compact car just isn't really doable. This may turn out to be very interesting for everybody racing as you have to get your bike to and from the race site somehow.

Since my husband and I are both doing IM Cozumel I'm really trying to find a direct flight form Atlanta to Cozumel.  I have no idea how we will be able to get from Cancun to Cozumel with all our luggage plus 2 bikes- I don't even want to think about how much of a hassle it will be.  We wanted to fly on Delta since that's where all our miles are.  But they only have a direct flight into Cozumel on Fridays- which stinks because we wanted to get there on Thursday so we'd have time to settle in.  So we still haven't booked our flight or hotel/resort yet.  Hopefully we'll do that soon.

FYI for anyone wanting to fly out of Denver.

Frontier airlines has finally announced their flight schedule for next November with flights directly to Cozumel. We called and changed our reservations to fly directly there instead of dealing with flying into Cancun.

The nicest part is that it is a direct flight. Lots of time saved and it is still on Thursday which is the day we wanted to fly in anyway to avoid the Thanksgiving day chaos on Wednesday.

Is anyone else worried about getting kidnapped during the run portion of the IM?  That's when I'd be at my weakest- I'd make an easy target.  Kidding...not really.  I hope it's safe to be down there for the IM!

Ever been?  Cozumel is about as safe as it gets in Mexico.  I feel safer walking around there at night than many places in the US

Hi Everybody, I hope your training is going well.  Just wondering, how do you all plan on getting your bikes to Cozumel?  Does it make more sense to ship or fly with them?  What do you plan on doing?

I think I am going to ship my bike as well --- but I have no experience shipping it ANYWHERE!

I think shipping is safer because it allows some time for 'error' if you ship it ahead of time.  If you check it and the airline says "whoops, bike is in Oklahoma, you'll get it Tuesday" then you are SOL.  If you ship it ahead of time to the hotel there's time to make sure it gets there in one piece... erm, several pieces

I was going to contact FedEX/ UPS soon and see what they say.

will share when I know !

I think I'm going to fly with my bike- especially if I can get a direct flight.  I've heard that if you fly internationally that you can fly with your bike for free- I need to verify this though because it sounds too good to be true.

I'm a little nervous about shipping my bike to Mexico.  I'm not sure about it getting to the hotel and being where it needs to be- but maybe I'm underestimating the system.  I have heard that some hotels/LBS's charge to receive a ship bike and hold it there until you can pick it up.  Might want to check on that because it could get pricey- I don't know.  I've never had to go through this process before.

I think what worries me is having to pack it back up in Mexico (making sure it's done right so nothing breaks) and getting it back.  I dunno though.  If ya'll find out more details on shipping it let me know- I may be convinced to ship as well.

hey folks, how's it going?

I raced the National Marathon on Saturday, am giving myself a week of rest/ active recovery, and then start officially training for Rhode Island 70.3 [July].  That training will roll into IM training !

so we're certainly not 'getting close' but we're getting closER !

I'm all recovered (I think) from my 3 marathons in 3 months.  I did my first tri of season about 2 weeks ago with min training and it went better than expected.  I've gotten back on the bike and have hired a coach.  My tri training officially starts April 1st- I'm ready to get back into some structured training.  I'll be doing an olympic in May to get practice with ocean swims and flat/windy courses   I will probably do a few sprints here and there this summer, and then the Augusta 70.3 late Sept.  After that it's the IM!  I think the time is going to fly and it's going to be here before we know it!

I booked the resort a few weeks ago and am just waiting to find a good deal on airfare.  Once I finalized our flights all I'll have to worry about is how to get my bike there!

If you are a USAT member and fly USAir, they don't charge for your bike.  The only problem is that they only fly into Cancun, not Cozumel.

I called US Airway and they confirmed that this statement is true.  He said that you have to visit the ironman north america website to print out the voucher.  I've searched all the IM sites and haven't seen anything about this.  Does anyone know where exactly I can find it?  Thanks!

Nevermind- I answered my own question.  I found all this helpful info from the "other" site:

Let's hope that

1. Swine Flu is not an issue (I'm not personally afraid, but I am worried that an overzealous media could lead to travel bans)
2. the drug cartels are not in Cozumel.

so, other than that how's everyone doing??

I'm kind of wishing that the swine flu paranoia would cause plane ticket prices to come down a little, but not happening so far...

I just booked 2 tickets to Cancun for $654 total on US Airways.  Most of this total was taxes/fees- I think the flights themvelves were $199 total round trip per person.  And that also included free voucher for bringing your bikes since I booked our flights from the IM website.  I actually received the voucher in an email 2 days after booking my flight so the deal is totally legit.  I would highly recommend going this route if you plan to fly with your bike- there's nothing better than saving money to fly your bike!

I can't believe we are in the 6 month range now!  Where has all the time gone?  Now that I have my flight booked I can figure out the whole bike case thing. I've been researching options- I think I know which one to go with.  Now I just have to work on being able to take my bike apart and reassemble it

How is everyone's training going?

I'm just starting to get around to looking at places and flights. The flight from Seattle to Cozumel is a bit brutal looking. We might just stay a night in Houston on the way down to break things up since we'll be traveling with a 2 1/2yr old.

Training going good! Did 21hrs last week including a 100 mile last Sunday and 75 mile yesterday (Saturday). Starting to work on picking up my speed and need to get more pool time! Signed up for the Lake Stevens 70.3 in August as a warm up race. Not looking forward to the Oct to Nov training period. That is when it gets cold and wet around here. I've been biking and running outside since October to prepare for it!
