An ice bath, huh? I've never heard of such a thing... at least not total-submersion. When I played baseball in high school, I used to soak my left arm after pitching a long game, so I can relate to how excruciating it must have been.

I had a GREAT swim this morning. 60 laps (1,500 yards) in a little under 40 minutes. Yes, I know, it's slow, but I feel like I made some great strides on my form. I borrowed a DVD (Tri Swim Coach) from a friend and realized my stroke is pretty ugly. I was slapping the water rather than slicing through it. This made a world of difference. I think with some practice, I should be able to shave a good chunk of time off my swimming.

As the northeast prepares for our next major snow storm, my triathlons seem like 100 years away. Also, my wife and I "took the plunge" and had a big, beautiful pool put in our backyard last fall. We haven't been able to swim in it yet and it's depressing seeing it covered in snow. SPRING... WHERE ARE YOU?!?!?

Spring is in California, and we don't even appreciate the great weather

I'm still not at 1,500 yards in 40 min.

It sounds like you've got a good plan for getting your swimming better. Getting a coach or even a kid who knows swimming top look at your stoke every once in a while is also not a bad idea. It's very easy to do things that feel right that you don't even know are wrong.

I had the first equipment failure of the triathon season and almost had the first equipment-failure-related injury of the season. Got up early to run on the treadmill, got down to the basement to see that my daughters had TRASHED the place... Arts and crafts CR@P everywhere. I have a Space Saver treadmill and I pulled the deck down only to find it covered in glitter. After brushing it off with a towel, I began to walk slowly on it. It sounded a little "crackle-y" but the sound subsided as I walked on it. Raised the speed to 4 MPH, brisk walk, so far so good. 5 MPH, slow trot, everything still good. 6 MPH, fast jog and my normal training speed. About 5 minutes in, the belt completely slipped, I almost did the first COMPLETE split of my life (good for a gymnast, not for me), followed by an ugly dismount. And the judges scores are in... 0.0! I slightly tweaked my hamstring and almost pancaked my cat. But all's well that ends well. Got the glitter cleaned out of the treadmill (air blasted it clean with my air compressor), finished my 5k, grounded the kids, got to work. I need a cup of coffee!

Happy and SAFE training everyone!

And the flowers are still standing!

At least the treadmill is sparkly and pretty now! lol  In al seriousness it's good that you weren't injured - you are very lucky.

Basically our mentor group has distilled into a "what kind of goofball stuff has happened to me" message board.  I think I'm OK with that, it's pretty entertaining!

Nice Ghostbuster reference!

I agree that the mentor group hasn't been very "hardcore training", but I'm not actually into my 20 week program yet, although the clock's ticking. And I'm generally a goofball anyway and like to keep things light. I do feel like I've gotten some great info thus far on nutrition and icing and I do have another actual question...

My lower back has been getting sore when I run on the treadmill. Does this mean that I am running hunched over? And how much $$$ should a newby like me spend on a pair of running shoes so I'm getting a quality product without breaking the bank?

Not sure why your back would hurt, but I'd say up your core strength training (or include it if you aren't).  You may want to have your form evaluated by a coach too, they can pick up on things you'd never dream of - could just also be posture like you said.

As far as running shoes, I would recommend you go to a run specific store if possible.  They will recommend shoes based on watching you run on a treadmill, your gait, etc.  That said, you might also want to check out Chi Running or the Pose method of running.  I ran barefoot on my treadmill  and my calves are still murdering me, but it was the best running that I've ever done, so I am fully invetigating the pose method.  Then, you just use any old basic trainers.  For now I wear the Brooks Trance 8 bc I'm a heel-striking over-pronator.  I am a big fan of Brooks - but brand loyalty varies from runner to runner.

Be careful with your back!

Well... if we're going to cover that, I'm split between the time I ran into the side of a car, when I was doing sprints at rush hour down a busy street, and the time when I went flying off the end of the road at IMAZ at 18mph, because I wasn't looking ahead.

It's amazing that I can be this stupid and still be alive

We can certainly push you more I'm just starting up again myself.

As has been mentioned, you should probably either go to a dedicated running store and get your gait checked out, or find a running group (often sponsored by the same running stores) and ask for feedback from the group.

As for costs, I really like my $75 New Balances, but they discontinued my model, so I'm going to have to look around again. You should be able to find something good from about $60-$80, but the fitting is REALLY important. Most of the small running stores will also take shoes back if you find that they don't fit after a week or so.

So, Michael & John - (OK, Brian you can know too, haha)

I created my own plan to fit my schedule and uploaded it.  I'm so excited!  I no longer have to look at my day and say "Oh, that won't work for me today".  Woohoo!!

Edited it to make sense :-P

Ice baths.. yeah, they're great.

Congrats!  Nice swim.

Spring comes and goes on a daily basis here.  Today it was spring -- warm (60 degrees) and rainy.  I ran in the rain, which I love to do.  Tomorrow it will probably be 35.

Hey everyone -- I'm just catching up with the messages after a day or so of pure hell at work.

Falling off the treadmill sounds scary.  That's what you get for having girls.  Wink  I have boys, and all they do is take things apart and burn them...

I had an exciting day today.  I ran fast for the first time since my (most recent) knee surgery couple of years ago.  Granted, it was only for a short distance (1/2 mile once, and 1/4 mile the second time), but it sure felt great...  I love running fast.  I'd probably love swimming fast too, if I could do that...

What has everyone got on the plate for Superbowl weekend?

I've got a 20 mile ride on Saturday morning with my tri team, in the COLD COLD 50 degree weather, and a 60 minute run on Sunday.

2 months off was nice, but I'm back in training mode again.

Go Cardinals!!!

Lol i wish it was 50 here.  I've got 1.5 hours on the trainer followed by a 30 minute run with my adventure gear and pack with 100oz of water.  Sunday i'll do a medium distance run at 8 miles.  I'm trying to work up slow so my tendonitis doesn't come back in my foot.

Weekend:  I hope I will run tomorrow -- I've had some minor hip pain lately, so I'm treading lightly.  I will bike Sunday.  Hope to get some swimming in somewhere along the way.

Have a great weekend everyone.

It's actually not too cold here this weekend, I may run outside on Sunday!  Excited for the superbowl.  Rooting for the Cards - love that Kurt Warner, total sweetie.

Today I did an indoor Swim-Bike brick!  I swam 700 meters and then did a spin calss for an hour.  It was great!

Tonight is the UFC fight between Georges St. Pierre and BJ Penn - hoping GSP kicks butt!

My wife and I were discussing Chicago weather as we were out running in shorts and t-shirts on Sunday

She claims she misses is... I'm not sure I believe her.

Hello everyone...
Great swim this AM... 1500 yds in 39 min. My new stroke is really paying off. Still needs some refinement, but I felt like I still had a good amount "left in the tank" after my swim.

As I mentioned in an earlier email, I decided to join Team in Training... It's for a great cause and I now have a coach to help me with my training. And I've decided that I'm really going to push myself and do a 1/2 IM in August. I found a great one that's only a few hours from my house (see link below)...
http://www.piranha-sports.com/Race58.aspx

I've also attached the link to my Team in Training page in case you're interested...
http://pages.teamintraining.org/de/philtri09/wsorg

So my schedule is shaping up with a Sprint in May, an Olympic in June and a 1/2 IM in August. I honestly never thought I would consider a race of that distance, but you only live once, right? hopefully it won't be one of those 95 degree August days.

Equipment question... since I have decided to take my training to the "next level" in hopes of completing an 70.3, I'm wondering if it's time to get a heart monitor for my workouts. Brian, I see that your workout logs include HR max and HR avg. And I noticed that this site recommends the Garman 305, which is also a GPS, but costs upwards of $200-$300. Is it worth it to pay that price so the workouts can be automatically downloaded, or should I go with a $20 HR monitor that is available on Ebay? Thanks.

So, I have a Forerunner 405 from Garmin and I love it.  The 305 I think is a larger face on the watch but the monitor piece that you wear is the same. The Forerunner, in my opinion, is awesome.  You can use it for bikes AND runs.  It tracks your distances, HR, speed, course, etc.  That's all uploadable so you can compare past data to current to see imrovements on specific routes.

You can also program in locations to the GPS.  This is helpful because if you ever get lost, you can use it to find your way back! (Not that I have EVER had this happen to me, haha)  OK, so I did get lost trail running once and had to use it - paid for itself at that moment.

So, what I recommend is buying the forerunner watch and ordering the HR monitor through Amazon.  I save $15 bucks by buying it separately, and it was brand new.  I also picked up a new cadence monitor separately on Amazon for a bargain too!

BTW all, I am picking up my new bike on Saturday!   I went with a road bike .  It's a 2008 LeMond Alpe d'Huez.  It's Carbon on the top tube, for, and stays and aluminum elsewhere.  It's on the shorter side for me a little so that I can get it aero'd out once I get my cycling muscles.

I am so excited!  Once I have it I will be sure to post pics!

PLUS, Saturday (when I go get it) is supposed to be 43 degrees.  I am hoping for no rain!!

I personally didn't start using a HR monitor until this year.  I have always had a garmin because i am a numbers junkie and love to know where i'm at with my pace.  But i never really used the HR.  I've done 4 70.3's with out one so you don't have to have one.  But i am going to use it for my Ironman this year.  If you do get one, they aren't very helpful unless you know your zones.  The only way to get those is to do a test.  So if you don't care about your pace then just get a HR monitor.  About the downloading stuff, it's cool, but i never upload my workouts here.  I just type them in.  It's to much work to find it and hook it up when i decide to enter the workouts.  It is cool to use the software that comes with the Garmin to see your zones and speed etc. when you are climbing vs the flats.

So, just to clarify -- 43 degrees is supposed to be 'warm', right?  Not around here it ain't!  (However, we've had pretty cold weather here recently, for us -- I woke up to 22 degrees this morning, which is beginning to remind me of when I lived in the upper midwest...)  I think I've become a cold weather wimp.  I did my Sunday ride indoors on the trainer even though it really wasn't that cold out.

BRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! 10 degrees this morning. Too cold to even get to the gym. I was able to get in 4 miles on my "glittery" treadmill. Also did an hour spin yesterday. I've been invited to participate in a 20 mile ride on Saturday morning, when it should be a balmy 35-40 degrees. I'm itching to do some "real" bike riding, but don't know if I can handle that kind of cold.

We'll wait and see on that one. Stay warm everyone!

HAHA, 40 degrees is SUMMER as far as I'm concerned at this point.  If we have 40 degrees on Sat & Sun I am pretty sure I'll be outside most of the weekend biking & running as much as possible.  Not swimming yet though - we wait until it's at LEAST 60 here - haha, that's a lil jokareeno.

Though hopefully this will be the last of the 0 temps here!

I was just informed that the group ride was being moved to Sunday morning... and it's supposed to be in the 50's! I guess it's time to dust off the bike!

Oh, and I'm trying to buy a CycleOps trainer on eBay... only an hour left in the auction.
