Which brand of goggles would you recommend for the swim? Which type of Macks earplugs are the best to use?

I'm also thinking about renting a bike instead of bringing mine. Which bike store would you recommend. It will almost cost the same to rent on as it would to ship/fly mine to the race. I've also read online to use a road bike instead of tri. What do you think?

Is there anything else that you would recommend for the race?

I'm starting to freak out a little bit! If you couldn't tell!

Read the "Important Situation at 2009 Triathlon" thread for info about some hotel boycott on race day

Use whatever goggles you are used to.  I haven't felt the need for any special goggles on the swim from Alcatraz.

I use the purple reusable earplugs, but others use the waxy moldable ones.  You can probably find someone who has some extra of the moldable ones to try that out if you like (I might have them), but figure out what you want to use beforehand.

I haven't had to rent bikes so I can't help you there.

How comfortable are you doing hills on a tri bike?  I do all my long rides on my tri bike anyway so I'll be using that.

You're gonna love the experience.   Should be a great race (my first time doing it too).

just remembered about the thread and thought i'd drop back in.

i have reservations at the Edward II and haven't heard anything from them.   anyone know anything else or should i give them a call to make sure everything is ok?

also, the water temp.  is really my only concern with the swim.   does anyone have a neoprene cap and booties they can recommend?

The Desoto or the blue seventy cap should work fine.  I don't use booties on the swim, although it does feel pretty odd when you can't feel your feet after the swim...

I think they only called you if they had a problem.  Me, for example...I had confirmed my registration with a Discover card...a card they no longer take.  So they called me to get a different card.

Just and FYI in case you guys don't already know about this...

If you miss your group swims and need to practice be sure to go to Aquatic Park (foot of Van Ness Ave just east of Ft. Mason). Not a lot of current, it's a nice sheltered swimming area. Great view of Alcatraz from there as well. The buoy line is about 400 yards, if you swim the entire circle, it is about 1 mile. Nice sandy beach entry. You are never alone out there, there's always at least a few swimmers. Also, if you need a place to change, shower or hang out, be sure to check out the Dolphin Club or South End Rowing Club. You don't have to be a member, you just pay the day use fee of $7.

Good luck to everyone! If anyone is coming in to town early and wants to do an afternoon swim on Thurs or Friday, just PM me.

Due to the economic climate since December many of the triathletes from the East Coast are not able to accept their slots into the event.  We have created a special California drawing and your name was selected.

Congratulations on securing an entry into the 2009 Escape from Alcatraz.

We look forward to seeing you in June,

I think I am going to have to bite the bullet and rent a bike.  I'm doing some math and it's going to be close to $300+ almost no matter what I do to get my bike out to California.  That seems RIDICULOUS for an 18 mile bike.  Anyone have a suggestion about where to rent one from?  I won't have a car so it needs to be close to the transition area (my hotel is close to the transition area).

well we decided as  a family to make a cross country trip and drive all the way from Florida to Cali.   don't have to worry about shipping the bike.   plan on being there Thursday before the race.

I wish I had that much vacation time!  I would SO try to tag along.   I don't suppose you'd like to take my bike for me?

Blazing Saddles is a good place to rent a bike. They have 2 roadbikes and maybe 1 Tri bike available for around $150.

I rented a bike from Blazing Saddles. It was cheaper and hopefully easier than shipping my bike across the country. I'm bringing my saddle and pedals. We're flying in on Thursday.

so where does everyone stand on training?   i'm hoping that swimming around 2500-3000 yds 2-3 times a week will be enough.

anyone doing a swim before the race?  i'm planning on getting there Thursday afternoon and hope to swim sometime Friday.

So I tossed in a nice swim this weekend in the lake - 55 degrees at the peir 1 foot under water.

We had some nice 2' waves from the 20+mph winds.  I am a decent swimmer and made it about, but when I was breathing to my left - into the waves, it was tough.  I really was tossed around.  That got me thinking about a few weeks from now - I can handle the cold, definite numbness after, but the waves were the worry.  SO, is there significant chop?  But I M thinking about a Friday swim to acclimate

Done the swim twice, there was some chop once, some pretty good chop the other time.  All depends on the wind and condition, so no way to know, but I would count on it

Drove to SF and swam at Aquatic Park Saturday morning. (Drive all the way down Van Ness and it dead ends) It's a nice little bay that is ppretty much self contained! Always a few swimmers in the water which is pretty reassuring when swimmming by oneself. The first three minutes reminded me of my childhood swims in Lake Tahoe. After adjusting, the swim was actually very peaceful and relaxing. Practiced bilateral breathing which helped me to stay somewhat straight and on target. Should be fun swimming with a tide. Have a good one!

Finally got airline tickets...$400!  Highway robbery I tell you.

And I extended out a day on the lead end...so I'm now in from 11-15 June.  I haven't been to San Francisco in years so this should be fun.

As for training...I'm still doing what coach says.

I did a 3 mile open water race this weekend but somehow I think the 80+ degree water was much warmer than what I will see in San Francisco.
